Winnipeg meets' thread (Ongoing)

I live by the border in ND, Winnipeg is about a 2 hour drive for me. I own a fair bit of stuff and would be interested in going to a meet. I'm not sure how crossing the border with all of it would go.

I remember when @bearFNF came up from MN, he had a bit of an odd conversation with the border agents, because "gonna visit my friend from the internet" doesn't exactly raise confidence especially since he didn't even have my full name lol. If you're gonna make the trip up, I'll pm you some details.

Yep, they looked at me funny, and asked a few more questions. They were real concerned that I was going to "leave" anything behind. I told them I had no intentions of leaving anything. Of course YMMV.

I would suggest having the name and address of where you are going memorized and don't mention the "met them on the internet" thing.

On another trip (not a meet, just wanted to go for lunch at the diner across the border at south Junction) they asked if I had ever been fingerprinted, which is a yes as I was when I went into the military. They then proceeded to ask me to get out of the vehicle and stand 20 yards away while they tore my vehicle apart. luckily they got a phone call when they starting to tear the lining of the inside of the hood of my car. It took me a bit to put my stuff back into my car. All the while the lady in the minivan behind me was laughing her ass off. Especially when one agent crawled into my trunk with his legs sticking up in the air.

So yeah, I am hesitant to go through that again, especially now that I use my vehicle to carry gear to the range and would hate to have them find a dropped round of spent casing... I also live two hours further south now.

Looks like it has sold already.

Still, we should try and narrow down a timeframe to hold a meet. If the holidays are too crazy, maybe beforehand? I'm flexible. No major plans yet.
Yeah the holiday time, esp christmas and new years weeks, are always crazy for me. I wouldn’t mind a meet a week or two before the holidays.

Me too, as far as I know, I'll be in Winnipeg for the holidays... No plans, so pretty flexible. Could likely even host if my place makes the most sense.

Yeah, that does sound troubling. I tend to avoid the major crossings. I know the one on at Pembina is a training location for the US border guard so they are looking for any reason to dismantle your vehicle. My dad did motocross in the 80s and one time they dismantled his pickup, trailer, and dirt bikes then tossed them all to the side of the road. All because there was a little left over gas in one of his jerrycans. He quit going to races in Canada after that.

LOL, this was at the south junction crossing, north of Roseau (very small, not open all the time type crossing) and it was the Canadian side that was a pain.
I was going to suggest using the major crossing as I "thought" it might be better, but from what you say, maybe not. I think it just comes down to luck of the draw/how bored the agents are that day?

Over at the International Falls/Fort Frances crossing I got a long lecture (even though there was a line of vehicles) about how "we" (the Minnesota DMV) needed to require front plates on motorcycles due where "they" (canadian border guards) decided to put the cameras for reading plates (they only look at the front of the vehicle (at that time, may be different now). So the agent had to actually get up out of his chair to go look. He also complained that I had a passport book instead of a passport card because he had to lean forward, open it up, and type in the number instead of just swiping the card. Pinnacle of laziness... One of the many reasons I do not cross the border anymore.

Oh, I have also had issues on the US side, not as many, but still a pain. So don't think I am just picking on the Canadian side, it's FUBAR all around IMO...

Ok in the absence of other replies it looks like the evening of Saturday Dec 7 is what we're gonna leaning towards unless we get a bunch more responses
