Everytime I turn my computer on, it goes through the Gateway logo, then goes through the Windows XP black screen with white lettering and green status bar, then it tries to go to the blue Welcome screen, but can't. Instead it starts in what I believe to be Safe Mode telling me to reboot because it has recovered from a device error, or something like that. I forget the actual wording. Then I shut it off and put it back on and it boots up fine. But when I get to my desktop it asks me if I want to send a report to Microsoft informing them of the problem. When I ask to see details, it says it was a Voodoo Banshee device driver error and gives me an error in the following file:

C:\Windows\Logfiles\Watchdog\040621_1500_01.wdl

Now let me qualify this. I spoke with Gateway and they said there are NO device drivers for the 3dfx Voodoo Banshee AGP to work with XP. So I found a Evolution driver for Voodoo Banshee on one of the Driver sites. I believe I installed it correctly, but I still get this error. Also, my HD recently crashed so I had to get a new one, and since then I've had this problem.

I also, on rare occasion upon second boot attempt, get a black screen with OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND. I then shut it off and put it back on and that fixes that for the time being.

Sorry so long. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sadly, I may have to agree. Your current card says you are not a gamer. You could probably get a newer one for $10-20 that would be just fine and not have the driver issues. The Banshee was before XP's time and 3dfx is long dead, so there's no professional driver support for new OS's like XP.

You may be able to boot into safe mode, then adjust your colours to 16. Otherwise you can try removing the video device and when you reboot say to ignore. This should put you in 800x600@16bits.

You should look at your newspapers for rebale sales. I got a Mad Dog ATI 7000 card for $10 after rebate.

It's a Banshee! This is even before the Voodoo2000 and Voodoo3000. This card may only be good for W9x.

if you get it up & running, see if doesn't work when you upgrade Dx. It probably will not work with anything after dx7.

Thanks for the advice. You guys are the best. Seems like I may have to spent $20 to buy a new video card.

Just one more question, which one? I don't do games, and my computer is rather old PII w/ XP

cool.
I have the pci version of that card in my daughter's pc.
Great pic quality and plays dvd nicely.
(admittedly much nicer pics than the tnt card.)
XP also has native drivers for it.

You should have it by Wed.

Windows XP will have drivers for a Radeon 7000 card, since that card predates Windows XP. However, the standard Windows XP Radeon driver doesn't support OpenGL. You can download the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI's Web site (version 4.6 is the latest, as of now). You'll also need to upgrade your version of DirectX to DirectX 9.0 or higher in order to use the newer Catalyst drivers. And ATI recommends that you also install Windows XP's Service Pack 1 or higher before you can install the newer drivers.
