Hi,

I have been WMP11 for quite a while now and it quite annoyed me with weird delays, skipping tracks and even altering tracklists from CD's while the tracks themselves stayed in place. It is very slow when a full scan from Kaspersky is running and only seems to work well with movies.

For all that I will be using VLC for music and WMP for DVDs. Are there better programs out there which are worth my consideration and don not fail to play music smoothly without delays or quirks?

Of course you can always work out the problems with the program, but I would remove it was it not for its library and DVD-capability. This program is lucky to be on my PC.

For music playback try Foobar2000 and/or J. River Media Jukebox. Both can do gapless playback. Both are flexible in configuring the output mode. Both are capable of playing back without audio quirks if your computer is up to it. Some computers setups just can't do audio without quirks due to poorly behaved drivers, poor latency, and other configuration problems. If you continue to have audio quirks when using Foobar or Media Jukebox then you'll need to look at optimizing your computer setup and configuration.

I exclude my media library from virus scans. I assume Kaspersky has an option to exclude certain directories. Scanning media files while trying to play them can result in delays and pops and quirks. If you get your media files from reliable sources you aren't going to need to worry about infected media files. If you get media files from unreliable sources then you'll probably want to make sure they get scanned before moving them to your media library. It is possible to infect certain media files (Apple QuickTime has had several critical exploits that can result in your computer getting owned) so scan them before importing.

For DVDs, you can either use VLC (which I see you already have installed), or you can go for Media Player Classic, as included with the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP). Then you won't need to use WMP for anything!

The source for my music is CD's. Downloading music isn't something I appreciate.

About Media Player Classic, does it work with well with Vista? Vista as OS is pretty stable now.

CCCP is well-supported in Vista (and Win7):
FAQ - CCCP

I should note that the updated version of MPC is actually "Media Player Classic - HomeCinema" (MPC-HC). That's what's included in CCCP.

Which website is a good source for Windows Mediaplayer Classic with the combined codec pack? The last thing I want is software junk that I don't need.

Lee Perry,

please explain for I have never heard or read about 'ffdshow and Haali's Media Splitter.'

How good is it and is it freeware or does it require a payment?

I am very curious indeed,

Deep Funk: leeperry is right; codec packs do have a little bit of bloat. I find CCCP to be more than acceptable though, because it has only a tiny bit of bloat, compared with other codec packs I've tried, and it's very easy to setup; it's a simple installer.

Right, I took a quick look at ffd show and haali's media splitter.

Ffd show doesn't really convince me at first glance, I'll have to dig a little deeper. Haali's media splitter revealed a lot to me with a quick first glance/read. Just reading pcm and flac made me slightly happy. I'll have to find some more information on the program and if it's pleasing enough, I'll use it.

I still have to check out what the possibilities are with MPC and WMA Lossless.

At the moment I'm considering Foobar2000 or WMP Classic.

EAC ripper is also on the list.

Haali's media splitter, it may be awesome. I still have doubts.

Tried Foobar2000, didn't work for me. I may reconsider using it if I'm sure I know enough to get started. I hate 'help' with Foobar2000. Some bits of information should be in your programme, standard.

WMP Classic is on my system. I like it for its smallness and I'm looking forward for futher evolutions.

EAC ripper is on my system, I'll have to study it.

Haali's media splitter is on my system via WMP Classic as an included programme.

VLC is no longer part of my system. I may replace it with Realplayer.

Update:

WMP11 is still on my PC: WMA lossless and WMA Pro are two formats I want to experiment with. Those two codecs save WMP11 from permanent removal.

WMP Classic: stays, it's cute and if DVDs work on it, it's all good.

EAC Ripper: stays, I have to find out its settings and how it works, WAV Lossless sounds sweet and CD-like.

VLC: permanently removed.

Mediamonkey: it works, it works very well and almost replaces WMP11, was it not for lacking WMA options for Lossless and Pro.

That's it for now, I really like Mediamonkey.

Haali Media Splitter

it's all freeware, and good behaving software...codec packs are bloated software basically. I know CCCP is supposed to be OK, but ffdshow does it all w/o fuss...HMS is here to allow the computer to read .MP4/.MKV/.M2TS etc

Hey just wanted to point out when installing CCCP you can select what components you want with the checkbox, everything is selectable/deselectable so CCCP is definitely a great/valid recommendation that wouldn't include any bloatware
