Recently my Windows Audio Service stopped working on my Windows Vista laptop. If I start it via the pop up I get when I go to the sound control panel or if I start it from the Services application from with in the administration tool folder I still can't get the audio to work. If I check the Services application afterwards it is running but if I hover over the Speaker icon in the task bar it still says the Audio Service isn't running (and the audio still isn't working). The problem is not hardware (it works in linux), and it's not drivers (it doesn't get far enough for that to be a problem). What I want to know is how to fix it without reinstalling Windows.

P.S. Is there a way to steam a computer's audio over the internal network to another computer for free? [Linux and Vista] (I know this requires the audio service but this is more so for after).
