Depends. I used to toss my rx700s onto my desk everyday, I had to stop because my desk was slowly loosing the battle.

I use stands and holders because it reduces wear and tear.
 
I don't buy "Headphone stands" but I like to get these $1 store clips that I can snap to my desk and wrap with cloth to hand them at. I've already scratched and torn my V6's pads from a desk wear, so I hang them

Mainly for looks. I dont have any headphone stand for mine...both are fine, no scratches. (to the moment)
