Will I walk in the footsteps of johnnylexus? (audio gear collecting dust)

Looking at my post count here you may think I am a real audio nut... and I am, in my own way; but that doesn't mean I actually spend any significant amount of time listening to music!!

I'd say on an average week I listen to less than half an hour of music--sometimes I'd have a few days in a week where I spend 1-2 hours at night listening to stuff, but other weeks I don't even touch my (still quite diminutive) audio gear. Also my album collection grows at a snail's pace.

Part of this is because I'm busy, part of this is because I can't listen to music while I work (I'm not a multitasking guy), and yet another part of this is because I am not THAT mad about music (and THAT has something to do with the two points above).

Now look at johnnylexus's sale--he's basically selling EVERYTHING after he bought an impressive setup and found he has no time to listen to it. Will I follow his footsteps?

I'm having serious doubts about how much gear I should have to be in proportion to my amount of audio enthusiasm. It's not that I plan on selling anything--having heard the etys and Senn 580 I can never go back--but do I really need to plunk down big money for a source and amp upgrade?

I'm seriously thinking of getting a little sub-$200 minisystem for somewhat better sound quality over a pcdp for home listening and have done with it.

It's a dilemma--though I don't listen to music much, I still like my music and would like my music to sound as good as reasonably possible when I have time to listen to it, but given how little time I listen to music and hence the low priority this has, and my tight budget (I would be borrowing from the credit card for amp and source purchases), how good is 'reasonably good'?

I think the main thing about becoming an audiophile is loving your music. if your not that interested in your music then that little bit you get out of the expensive equipment really isnt worth it. I personally sit down on my couch and just listen to my music for about 1-2 hours a day instead of watching tv just because its often alot more entertaining. I suggest if you dont use it that much and youre not that into music you spend your money on something you enjoy more (and give your equipment to me for xmas

Well as I said, I don't really have any gear to sell as of now, rather I'm looking to prevent myself from spending unwisely--the only thing sadder than the audio nut that spends all his time on audio gear without actually listening to music is the audio nut that spends all his time and money on audio gear and ditto.

The remaining question is, so should I buy that minisystem or not?

On average I spend 1 to 5 hours per day listening to music, however much of it is done in front of the pc, where I'm rather distracted from listening and only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time i really dedicatedly listen to the music (for example when taking my 250's for a walk or when falling asleep to them).

The only reason I care about headphones and such is because I love music and listen to it a lot...

I voted for > 5 hours. I thought about the question like "hmmm...well 5 hours would be about listening to 5 cds all the way through during a week", and I'd have to say I listen that much.

I listen to music pretty much all the time when I'm on my computer, sometimes when I study, and reserve dedicated listening for walks and at night in bed.

I think my upgrades will only go to a certain point; I don't really want it to overtake my search for more music. My goal is to have a really good home and portable source, a relatively expensive home amp like the Corda HA-2 and a portable one like a Porta Corda or maybe a Meta 42 later on, and headphones both open and closed for home and portable applications. Once I've done that, I think I'll mainly be devoting myself to expanding my CD collection which, as of right now, is rather diminuitive.

Get the mini system if you like, maybe an amp upgrade as well; it all depends on how much that listening time is worth to you. If you can't afford anything else right now, and would be happy just with the mini, go for it.

Note to self: DEFINITELY forget about buying that SACD player and ASL amp based on current vote results

I take it you're the kind that can do anything (physically possible) with your phones on.

Either that or you lead a very leisurely life

Probably about 3 hours a day during the school year, now its the holidays it's closer to 5 a day. Every day.. I have to find a way to import some Japanese CDs.. These 128k mp3s are killing me :\

I'd say I probably spend about 3-4 hours daily listening to music. Usually half of that is listening to music while doing something else - I'll just let the cd changer spin and have the speakers going while I'm on the computer or reading. But I do usually spend at least 1 full hour a day solely listening to music with my headphones. In special cases - just got new music or got a new audio component - I'll spend at least 4 hours solely listening to music. Not to mention the 1-2 hours I spend playing music daily (I'm a pianist).

What can I say, I love music, as my sig implies.

[/size]I listen while I work. And, admittedly, work involves a lot of desk time for me.

I probably average 3 hours or so at work, 2-3 hours at home and about an hour in the car every day. I program for a living and when I'm home by myself, I listen to music a lot while I play on the computer or do whatever else.

Some times I have "down time" where I'm not into my hobbies, including audio. Psychological problem. This is the exception, the rest of the time it's pretty much the above.

Me too. Only thing is that my desk rolls down the track at various speeds and sometimes I need shooting muffs over my Ety ER-6's to hear the music.

I listen for 4 to 6 hours on the train and another 2 or 3 at the motel everyday. The days I'm home I always get at least an hour of quality listening in and usually a lot more. That doesn't include listening while using the computer or while watching cartoons.
