Why put the equipment at the front?

I notice that everyone seems to put their amps, processors, players and so forth up front between the speakers. Why? WAF?

Really, couldn't you just as well put it behind you where you wouldn't have to look at it? Or put your player right beside you so you don't have to trudge back and forth to change discs? I'm sure some people LIKE looking at their expensive equipment, but I'd just as soon have bare speakers in front.

My speakers are further forward than my equipment rack, which is off centre toward the left. But yeah, the reason for the "normal" layout is almost always down to aesthetics and practical concerns like cabling.

My setup moved recently from between my speakers, but it's just around the corner so the cables can be kept short. My speakers and subs don't use regular speaker wire though so it's not as critical, but still short runs of XLR cables are benifitial.
Also I love the look of the gear, and wouldn't dream of hiding it away.

one compromise would be mono blocks near each speaker and then the rest of the equipment rack off to the side. This arrangement allows for better imaging, in my opinion, and keeps the speaker cables shorter (albeit the interconnects longer).

What, is it important to keep the speaker cables short or something? I figured in any reasonable sized room, running speaker cables to the front would be insignificant. And what's two speaker cables, anyway?
