Just curious on why people need more than 1 set of phones, amp etc. I have a shure e500 for portable use, grado rs1 for home use, a rsa sr71 and am awaiting a 5.5g imod. Being rather new to this headphone craze and I am more traditionally involved in home stereo I never felt the urge to buy more than 1 pair of speaker, 1 turntable, 1 amp etc. I try to sell or give to my relatives my older equipment. It seems more prevalent in the headfi community to own multiple pieces of equipment. What drives you all to want to own all these pieces of equipment?

Different purposes or moods. Or just the drool factor... You just have to have it!!!!

Here's an example.. 1 headphone may be fantastic for classical music in general but if you also listen to electronica or something it might sound horrid with that genre and vice versa... Different headphones suit different needs.

1. Specialization: For the same reason that golfers own a set of different clubs instead of a single, "swiss army knife" club.

2. Feasibility: It is more reasonable to switch among headphones than speakers (cost, space, convenience).

3. Perceptual development: Having a variety of aural windows on music helps train one's ears to discriminate subtle features of reproduced sound. Consider how the experience of tasting a variety of wines will help you to appreciate the sensory quality of a novel wine.

Each of my phones present the same music differently and i do prefer one or two over the others for specific generes and with different amps too, for variety. It really is amazing how the subtle and not so subtle differences add up to be more so enjoyable and part of the entertainment factor ... And it really is relatively inexpensive in terms of the larger world of audio reproduction gears, to do so... And it is an education as to what we know from experience to then discuss their differences, ergo the head-Fi hobby here...

But, its true its not necessary as I could probably scale back to a one all around set up, but I would miss the variety of presentations I now have to choose from for fun!

Listening to more than one setup also develops your ear as to know the finer points in music reproduction which then can be used to identify ones own preferances to be applied to much more expensive to attain speaker stereo systems...

For me there are one major reason to acquire multiple headphones/amplifiers:
* Portability vs. sound quality.

The most portable headphones/amplifiers don't have sound quality on par with the top end stationary ones. And the top end stationary headphones/amplifiers don't have the portability of the smaller portable ones.
So two separate rigs there must be...
