this is probably a really n00b qn, but i am buying the card soon n decided instead of trawling thru google n forums, i cld just get expertise from u experts out there.

so y does this card have 4 line-outs? whats the difference?

also, does any1 disagree that its SQ matches up to the EMUs and juli@s out there, with a gd amp?

thanks!

1) Da crd has 4 line outs cause it fidz 8 chnls (7.1), 2 ch/lineout

2) It won't match them; the DAC is too old.

But it is a cheap alternative if all you want is an optical out!

The amp doesn't matter if the source isn't good enough. I own both the AV-710 and a 1212M and can tell you that the AV-710 isn't even close to the 1212M's output quality.

best reply ever..

and yeah, I agree its only a worthy component if only used for its optical out.

question to all you people out there. im considering buying an av710 for myself, to use instead of my transit, is that a better move for bitperfect optical out (even though its quite a bit cheaper)? im under the impression at this point that all i need is a bit perfect opti out seeing as i have a good dac and amp already. or am i mistaken?

afaik as long as the M-Transit is bit perfect it shouldn't function any better or worse than the AV-710 as an optical out, aside from one being usb the other pci.

dont take this as 100% fact though, I still have a lot to learn.

oh, i get it now.

so if i am making a new desktop, and i have an amp and a pair of RS1s, whats the best matching soundcard i can use to plug my equipment to?

Depends on what else you need. Do you game? (3D sound processing). Do you need multichannel? If not, I would just get ESI Juli@ or E-MU 1212M (they will run you about $150). Or you can go for cheaper E-MU 0404 PCI (about $100).

gaming's not a priority for me, tho i do game once in a while. is it true that if i do away with speakers, and just use my phones, multi channel soundcards r useless to me? i'm looking at 1212 and juli@ now, what r the strengths & weaknesses of each, does any1 know?

holdup holdup. i was considering getting an AV710 to use as an optical out to my Zhaolu Dac instead of dealing with the USB hassle of the transit. this should be about the same right? why would this not work for gaming? gaming is quite a big priority for me, so 3D sound is important. i only game via headphones though, so its all running through my dac and amp first. do i lose the 3d imagining somehow with bit perfect or w/e? can someone please explain before i make a stupid mistake!!!

Yes, since you're only using the front two channels (left and right).

The 1212M has more inputs and outputs (including S/PDIF and optical in/out), it separates the analog section from the motherboard, and it has a higher-tier DAC. On the downside, the drivers are somewhat unfriendly and you'll probably require some cheap (~$1.50) adapters to convert from 1/4" to RCA to feed your amplifier (or buy terminated RCA to 1/4" cables).

The AV-710 doesn't have EAX ("3D sound"), so for games that incorporate it, you won't be able to use that feature. Many people have reported that cards with EAX will pass the EAX-modified signal along to an external DAC.

It doesn't have 'true' EAX, but I believe it can emulate EAX 2.0 at the software level. However, I do recall reading somewhere that it won't do bit perfect output with that emulation enabled.

the 1212m looked good... till i realised it needs 2 slots. i'm thinking of making a mini shuttle system, so space is at a premium. if i use say chaintech as a transit to an external dac, what ext dac is recommended?
