Why does everyone hate the Audigys?

My point was that I wanted to hear someone's opinion as to what they heard and why it was bad compared to an eMu or a Revo. Yeah, that's subjective, but that's far better than telling me that it's because it resamples to whatever kilohertz or that the voltage is fluctuates. That's not what I'm listening to. Explaining technically WHY it sounds bad is great for getting to the root of the problem, but I want to read about WHAT you're actual hearing experience is that makes you say it sounds bad.

Let me put it this way. With cars, you can read all about horsepower figures, torque figures, and skidpad results, but the bottom line is how the car feels when you're behind the wheel. No amount of numbers and test results are going to tell you that. And that's why a subjective opinion matters. It gives a rough idea of what's happening and if I read several reviews saying similar things, I can piece together whether or not it's worth my time and money based on that. It's not an exact science or the end all be all to everything, but it is a starting point.

You will for Doom 3 and Half-Life 2.

Dude, when you have to send the Audigy 2 to a specialist to make some mods in order to improve the quality, that tells me something about Creative's quality of components.

I have to agree about the subjective value of sound card opinions. Usually, I never have a problem searching for the best quality products by perusing of the user ratings on review sites. But when it comes to certain products, quality takes a backset to personal preference.

For example, in researching digital camera, I've found the user ratings for all the major brands I was looking at were almost identical. Just about everyone who bought their cameras loved it, even though there were night and day differences between each brand. So it comes down to what you personally prefer, and sometimes people can be vague about their purchase (I Love it!! "Well why do you love it?" "Well cuz I just do!!") Ugh...

That being said, what I'm looking for is minimal line noise, good punchy but controlled bass, midrange that doesn't end up receding into the background, and 5.1 support for surround sound speakers.

That said, does the EMU 1212M support a 5.1 setup?

Anyone remember the Creative AWE64 Gold by the way? That was the first and best sound card I ever used. When I upgraded to the Audigy 1 I thought things would just get better from there. Boy was I wrong. I would have put the AWE64 right back in if the motherboard I upgraded to still had an ISA slot (remember those slots??)

I thought getting new cans would help. Nope. So now maybe another sound card upgrade (and the addition of an amp) will finally bring me back to those AWE64 days of bliss.

Nope. The EMU is a stereo-only card, though you could always use a card like the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 for your speakers and the EMU 0404 (half the price of the 1212m while still retaining 90% of the sound quality) for your headphones.

The same thing happened to me "upgrading" from a Soundblaster 16-Value ISA (it was so old it that it came with a CD-ROM drive, back before computers could use CD-ROM's without special adapter cards, and so it had a CD-ROM data port on it) to a generic AC'97 card.

Garbage in, garbage out. You should notice a definate improvement in sound quality with a source upgrade.

My friend has an audigy series card and says that the bass is very clouded, muddy, and not very clear, and this bleeds up into the midrange. The highs he claims are OK.

Cheers,

For the most part, that is how it sounds to me too.

I don't know how to run a test, but when I use the windows task manager it stays right around 30% cpu usage. That seems a bit high to me and would definitely affect frame rates if I used it for gaming. There must be something wrong in my setup.
I suppose I should try kernal streaming and see how that does.
BTW, I'm not intentionally thread crapping, just answering a question.

I love my Audigy 2 zs. It's a fantastic sound card for the PC.

Sure it wont match my hifi in terms of sound quality, but it's not suppose to.
I dont really use my PC for music anyways, mainly for watching anime and gaming.

Most people, who come to this forum, are interested in music, not anime or gaming

....

What kind of DAC are we talking about here?

This seems like a silly thing to say considering the quality of hifi pc soundcards these days.

Of course an amp is always part of this equation.

PC + Soundcard with bit perfect digi out + dac + amp will give you better results with your music collection at your fingertips.
