TECHNO TECHNO TECHNO

I thought they buried it in the last millenium?

Seriously, I listen to Orbital, The Grassy Knoll, Thrill Kill Kult, Massive Attack, St. Germain, etc... all have ventured beyond the basic 4/4 house stereotype.

My ex gf used to listen to "popular" Techno & Dance (mixed in with a little crap rap, like 50 Cent) 24/7. That is one of the main reasons we are no longer together. Most. Annoying. MuSick. Ever. IMO...

I do agree that there are some good techno artists out there, but they don't get enough attention. Same as all music genres.

I think it also depends what kind of techno you speak of. The stereotypical techno is just a loud drum beat behind some computerized melody, with little, almost insignificant changes to the song to make it slightly appealing. However, this kind of music is best played for junkies and teens on ecstasy

Techno from those like Aphex Twin, DJ Venom, Chemical Brothers, and Paul Oakenfold, is far different. The beats are complex and the ability it takes to craft these kinds of tunes is selectively unique amongst only few individuals. I would suggest you do not judge an entire genre like that until you've truly heard music that represents it.

Oh yeah, and considering the nature of techno, it's also very possible that your co-worker was listening to this music for the repetative nature of it, which allows many people to focus better.

Exactly.

Can't we have some kind of rule here that if you are going to revive a thread that is over a few months old then you should briefly summarize the main points of the thread (so we don't have to read though all those old posts), and maybe also state the reason for reviving it in the first place.

(Sorry, pet peeve.)

There certainly is a lot of good techno music but usually people think that all the techno is something like crazy frog etc.

Now when I mentioned it... someone should really kill that screwing frog.

Aye. Reminds me of that old game where frogs popped up from a machine and you'd hit them with a hammer. Could probably make a killing with that these days. Of course, I also believe that anybody who refers to electronic music as "techno" needs to get with a hammer too...

lol, I don't know about the a hammer... I have been known to generalize genres that are beyond my understanding. However, I do not start threads dismissing them either.

For me the term "techno" is a dead giveaway that a certain viewpoint isn't very credible.

Most of you guys are not really listing straight techno, alotta tech-house, and techy trance, but no pure Techno.
Take a listen to a set by any of the following to hear the best of the best:

Umek
Dave Clarke
Jeff Mills
Richie Hawtin

As for why do people listen to it...well...uh....maybe...cuz...they like it?
Isnt that why everyone listens to whatever the heck they listen to?
Cuz they enjoy listening to it.
Country music makes me want to hurt people, but I dont question why other people like it

(well, sometimes I do)
For me, techno is a personal alternative to house music (vocally, jump-up house which I cant stand). It can be dark, layered and extremely complex. The Inspector Gadget song you heard is more a commercial type track and somewhat corny which is why it rubbed you the wrong way.

Personally, I like anything "techy"; including intelligent jungle, breaks and experimental/IDM.
Wanna give it a try?
Start with some "minimal techno"-more accessible than the faster BPM really hard stuff.
Richie Hawtin-"Live at the Windsor"
Its a masterpiece.

*Also, if you find you like the more minimal stuff, try out some Ricardo Villalobos. His sets are bananas.
