why do people listen to techno?
Jul 24, 2003 at 8:41 PM Post #16 of 61
Electronic music in general seems to be on the decline...i don't listen to it much anymore....it's kinda boring now....

you should keep in mind that there are a lot of sub-divisions in electronic music....ie. trance, house, break-beat, drum n bass, trip hop, ambient, etc...

in my opinion, most of the garbage comes from house and trance, where 4 on 4 beats are used the most. House and trance are also more mainstream and popular than other types of electronic music, and with constant 4 on 4 beats, it's easy to mix and so a lot of DJs do house

sure, some house music is decent, but everytime I think of house I think of someone like Todd Terry and his god-aweful club remixes of great EBTG songs....

Can you tell me about the differences between each sub-group? Or would that be too much to post?

I could tell you everything (which would be about 497 pages long

), but it would probably be better if you asked about a certain type or a few different ones.

The problem that techno runs into sometimes is that it is hideously easy to make. I say this as someone who has, after doodling around with various synth programs, has made really bad techno in a few hours. Most other forms of music require requisite talent.

But that doesn't mean that techno is bad! Some of it's sub-genres are amongst my favorite. But it's probably the easiest form of music to do badly.

The other problem is that so much of it is designed for dancing too. Lots of people I know who dance to techno don't know anything about music or about electronica. They don't really care what the music sounds like so long as it has a strong beat. (Of course, their are plenty of people who dance to techno that do actually listen to it, my sample may be pretty bad in this area.) Again, if all you want is a basic beat and some "futuristic" sounding stuff" over the top, give me a few hours and I'll wip something up. (Not that I'm good at it, with some software you can too! It's even kind of fun... Just don't listen to your creation for too long after you make it!)

oh and All Music Guide has okay sub-genre definitions too. (www.allmusic.com)

I'm no fan of techno, not because its bad but because it is too simplistic to me. A lot of music I listen to is essentially dark techno with lyrics. And there are a few techno songs I like, namely The Sound of Goodbye by Perpetuous Dreamer. I don't like overly "happy" music that is obviously designed just for dancing. But some people do like it, and that's fine with me.

And I think you hit it on the head blip. Techno is among the easiest music to make, along with rap, and as such there are a lot of people making it that really shouldn't.

donovansmith, you just perfectly described electronica in general. There are many good artists, however, it is simple to make electronica, and idiots do it, and make funky sounding beats.

For every articualte, detailed, well thought out electronica chronical there is (ultraworld, ladies and gentlemen we're floating in space, blue lines, etc), there are hundreds of poorly designed copies. It can be a wonderful genre, it's just got alot more rough than diamonds that you gotta sort through
