why do I hear static in my new sure 530pth?

Thats cause you have an Ipod Touch. lol. Don't think its harmful though, and it usually happens with many mp3 players while handing sensitive IEMs I believe. (read this somewhere)

its the itouch's fault not the headphones. you have a i don't wanna say crappy dac built into the itouch but it's nowhere near top of the line lol. but i could be wrong.

Yes.

That's weird because I have connected E3Cs to pretty cheap MP3 players before, are the electronics in the Zen Micro Vision that much better than what is in the iPod? Or are the Sure 530's that much better than the E3Cs?

You will hear that kind of low hiss with most IEMs + DAP due to the low impedence of the Shures. An amp will resolve this problem if you want to go down that route.

Depending on what is causing the noise an amp is as likely to make the problem worse instead of better.

I would agree with the 'phones are better than the source' comment. In any event the noise is probably completely inaudible when music is playing and if that's the case then you can safely ignore it.

You will always get rid of noise or static when hooking up to the amp because static and ground noise is almost independent from the volume level. You just have to turn up volume to around max or max, and adjust the volume on the amp. From the line-out, it shouldn't be noisy if only the amp is quiet.

On some players interference appears when playing back ogg Vorbis files.

OK let's figure this out because right now I am not a happy camper. I just connected my 530's to my Arcam AVR-250. This is a reasonably high-end piece of audiophile equipment. I used the in 1/4" phono adapter that shipped with the 530's, and connected straight to the shortest cord, with no PTH or lengthener attached.

I heard static with no music playing, and with volume set to 40dB. If I turned the volume to 0dB, I still heard a static. It was not the exact same static that I hear on the iPod, but it's static nonetheless.

Now I suppose the circuitry for the phono out on the Arcam might not be the same high end quality as the rest of the receiver, but I am quite dubious.

I suppose it could be the PlayStation3 that I have optically hooked up to the Arcam but I find that dubious as well.

Also the the person who said you can't hear it when music is playing, that is not quite true. Just listened to a Ryan Adams CD and I could hear it on quiet songs when he's singing with the breath technique.

It was annoying.

Otherwise the sound quality of the 530s are quite good. They are a good match for the neutral sounding Arcam product, at least so far.

What can I do to really verify if this is the phones or my equipment? At this point I am ready to return these to Sure or just return them to the store.

Dude, there is nothing wrong with your phones or sources...its just the impedance doesnt match up well. ur shures have a very low impedance (this is neither a good or a bad thing, just how they work) and ur players are not designed for such a low impedance device. If you want, i think if u got like a 30 ohm resistor, that would solve the problem...

If u searched through these forums, you would see that certain players hiss with certain phones.

Iems are notoriously hissy....
