Whoa-1483 users online tonight simultaneously

Judging by how many guests there are as compared to registered users, something funny is going on. As if someone's cloned themselves 1000 times to slow down the server. The site does seem to be running rather slowly right now...

Oh my lord. handling fairly well = not crashing = you are right.

Slow as a mofo = bad = you're wrong.

I mean, I'm on broadband and this is SLOW.

Argh! Please Jude, don't register 1000 new visitors all at once! Not until we get more bandwidth!

Funny thing is, that Sony HD player review didn't even register on my radar. Funny, the things that will draw attention, eh? Well I guess we know which review is going to become a sticky next

Slashdot is arguably the most popular website for people in the IT industry and geeks in general. It has a lot of flaws, but it's popular. It gets literally hundreds of millions of hits a day. Whenever they feature a link to another website, that huge mass of visitors goes over to check out the link, and the poor target website gets hammered by thousands of people at once. This is called "The Slashdot Effect" and it tends to kill servers. That it didn't kill Head-Fi more than temporarily is a testament to the work Neil has done behind the scenes on this site.

Ah, that would certainly explain what's going on. Nice to see the site survived the massive attack.

I'd love to hear a tally of how many people, in total, ended up looking at that review when all is said and done.

1496 and counting.

By the way, in another thread Xanadu pointed out that it hit 700. There I joked that it was probably due to secret p r 0 n for pervs on the site. Who knew it was actually secret p r 0 n for nerds on the site. The internet caters to all sorts I guess.
