I have an old magnavox that sounded great, but somethings wrong with it, when you put the cd in and press play, the cd goes forward, then backwards, then forwards, then backwards, then says "E", dont think its nothing serious, but need it fixed, anyone here work on them or know who does?
thanks

power supply related , most likely an open / leaky cap in the motor control circuit .

If you have a multimeter open up the case and play a CD while monitoring the motor supply leads , then look at the parts preceeding the motor forclues

is this a portable ? Home CD player ?

If portable try new batteries or an AC adapter to eliminate low power as the sourceof theproblem .

If not that I still think it is motor supply related , not logic related

Hi rickcr42,

Thanks for the reply.

It is a home player. I thought the problem may have been in the transport itself. It only happens during the first track, it plays the rest of the cd just fine.

well IF mechanical look at the track (as mentioned above ) for any grit / pet hair mixed with the lubrication . It will look like a gunk .

Next inspect any springs for integrity and finally check to make sure allscrews and lock nuts are still tight.

A CD player is a mechanical device first and you would be surprised what can come loose over time . Use a well illuminated area and possibly even a magnifier to inspect the mechanicals.

If this all checks out turn to thepossibility that the problem is electronic and inspect the pcb for any discolorations or scorch marks that would indicate a part failure.

If it is a bad logic chip it can be rough to track down unless you know the timing sequence and have a logic monitor to check it

wish i could help more

Hi rickcr42,

The unit is relatively new, about a year or so in age. And of course, it's out of warranty.

I'll take a look at the transport and see if there is anything that is obviously out place.

Thanks for the help.

sorry to hear that , sign of the times man.

there was a time when things were not 'meant" to break and be disposable .
the guarantee was actually worth something and the workmanship was of a high enough standard that not to fix it never came up , you did willingly .

Service contracts ? The guy that thought this up needs a beating . Totallly uncalled for , having to pay extra for something that should be standard for ANY company that stood behind a product .

Mini rant , hope it works out .
