Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted, Robert Trujillo, Ron McGovney?

Also, which was/is Metallica's best lineup? With Dave Mustaine or without him, ....?

P.S.
I've noticed that only Cliff Burton was mentioned here:
Who are the Greatest Bass Guitarists of All Time?

Does Cliff Burton belong to the group of Greatest Bass Guitarists of All Time?

Cliff Burton. By far. He was so talented, and Metallica went waay downhill when he died.

However, I think Rob is very talented, and it'll be interesting to see how he plays on the new album.

Without a doubt, Cliff-but for more reasons than simply being the most proficient musician/instrumentalist of the lot (which could be debated anyway). Quite simply, the albums featuring Cliff are far and away the band's best efforts. "And Justice For All" had some good music, but the recording quality is so horrible one cannot really even hear Jason's playing, and the band took a serious nose dive starting with the "black album" (much less interesting lyrically and musically, and the musicianship has steadily declined).

In sharp contrast, Dave Mustaine (and Megadeth in general) have been doing increasingly stronger material, starting with "Rust In Peace" (and peaking with "Countdown to Extinction" and "Youthanasia"). Metallica is not better off without Dave, but Dave is much better off without Metallica. There is simply no question that Megadeth (excepting the first album, which sounds like a "Kill Em' All" rip-off) has ALWAYS been a much better band musically and lyrically than Metallica.

Cliff was the best although Jason is no slouch either.

Is this a trick question............Mustaine never appears on any Metallica album, already replaced with Kirk Hammett for debut "kill em all" although he helped shape early sound before Hammett arrived

Burton is the main man for bass, all thier best work done on first three albums with him

Mustaine turned out to be great musician regardless of his mismatch with early Metallica, can't imagine anyone saying they like Metallica and not also liking classic era Megadeth.

This made a great streak of metal for 10yrs since as Metallica put out weaker albums Megadeth was putting out it's best work......just switch from Metallica -> Megadeth in late 1980s \m/

Mustaine was on several demo albums and tapes before Kill Em All, which were quite wide-spread. (isnt this how Metallica gained fame at first too, by releasing demos which spread out fast on tape trading and copying)

All Metallicas bassists were skilled on their own way. However, as a band mate and backbone, Cliff is unbeatable. After his death Metallica went downhill and FAST.

Couldn't agree with this more! In fact, this is pretty much exactly what I do!

Was how I understood it too, making their sue-the-fans crusade all the more ironic (and pathetic).

x2

The Black album seemed good at the time of release but quickly got uninteresting. When I listen to it now I almost get the feeling of a over-perfect Steely Dan studio album or something.

And Burton sure belong to the group of best bass players, both musically and as a charismatic person in stage. Pity i never got the chance to see him live though...
