WHo is the best metal group in history?

I would definitely agree that Megadeth are in the top 10. Where in the top 10, I don't know, but somewhere up there.

Without a doubt Metallica are one of the best Heavy Metal bands ever. Anyone who denies this due to the poorer recent albums is deluding themselves.

Kill 'em All, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All... (And to a lesser extent the black album) are pure thrash metal at its peak.

Nothing can compete with these 4 albums on pure energy and quality of Metal \m/

Furthermore, their live sets are absolutely brilliant. Has anyone seen Live ****: Binge and Purge. ? This is my favourite live concert of all time due to pure energy. They relate to the crowd and it goes off like a firecracker.

I'm also glad people put Iron Maiden in. Funnily enough I'm listening to "Killers" right now. D'Anno's vocals are great. How can anyone have supreme reverence for lyrics like;

"Charlotte the Harlot show me your legs,
Charlotte the Harlot take me to bed,
Charlotte the Harlot let me see love,
Charlotte the Harlot let me see blood."

Absolutely MARVELOUS

"scream for me iron-mates!" MAIDEN MAIDEN MAIDEN...

yeah... my vote goes for Iron Maiden. the two D'Anno albums are great (i prefer the first s/t one), Remember Tomorrow, Phantom of the Opera, and Prodigal Son are awesome songs. i really the like D'Anno period, much more raw and punkish than progressive.

But then when Brucie joined, no one can stop them. What an incredible string of albums: Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Live After Death, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (the best Maiden album). Then Adrian Smith quit and the songwriting wasn't up to par. No Prayer for the Dying wasn't all that good, although Fear of the Dark had some brilliant moments.

Then Brucie left and the Blaze Bailey period came up with only one good song, The Sign of the Cross. thankfully short lived.

Thank gawd for Brave New World. what a great return to form. Maiden's best in years. can't wait when the now one comes out.

Man, i can't believe anyone mentioned gwar, the ultimate heavy metal band. I mean, they embody everything, overelaborate costumes... and ummm... loud music

Huh?????

I thought it was the first of several downhill steps for them..

I mean, Powerslave and Somewhere in Time didn't top the heights of Beast and Piece of Mind, they were more like holding patterns.. they both showed awesome songwriting and musical creativity..

Maybe it was me getting older, but I found nothing new in Seventh Son. It sounded like they were getting a little tired.
There's a few great songs on there, don't get me wrong. I still listen to it on occasion. "Clairvoyant" is an awsome song, no doubt. "Can I Play with Madness" was an interesting attempt to make a radio hit.. but the rest of the album struck me as uninspired. Up through Somewhere Maiden was my favorite band.. After Seventh Son, I just didn't care too much about them anymore..

I have to say that Number of the Beast is one of the best metal CD's out there. Absolutely classic. Piece of Mind in my oppinion is the weakest out of this Dickinson era.

Powerslave in my favourite album of theirs, with all songs being classic. Somewhere In Time introduced the synthesiser which just made this stuff rock even more

And Seventh Son was... well.. Seventh Son. This is also one of my favourite Maiden albums. Its a progression in their music since it essentially extended on Time's idea of prog metal with individual sounding songs, but incorperated the synth and some kick ass lyrics as well as rifts. Moonchild anyone?

I'm surprised so many people like Seventh Son..

I think a lot of it has to do with where you started with the band.. if Seventh Son was the first album you heard by Maiden, then I could see how it would rank pretty high.. I mean, even an average Maiden album is better than 80% of all other metal albums..

My first Maiden album was Number of the Beast. Then I bought each successive release on those thick vinyl lps they used to put out. I used to sit in front of my stereo, or with the 'phones on, and read the notes and follow along with the lyrics, memorizing them all.. that as, up until about 1988.

Times were changing, my new favorite bands were R.E.M., Husker Du and Sonic Youth. My listening habits were also changing. At this point, I had so many albums that I didn't have the time to sit around staring at cover artwork and reading lyrics. Seventh Son was the first Maiden album that I didn't buy on vinyl. In fact, I didn't buy it at all.. my brother did.. on cassette!

Plus, in 1988 I was a senior in high school and getting ready to go off to college. The new Maiden album just wasn't the big event that it used to be. I became very familiar with the album, but I always found it to be just, not up to snuff. There were some cool moments.. but hearing Bruce sing "7th son of a 7th son" over and over and over again.. at some point I was like.. this is just silly. Of course him singing "rolling, turning, diving" over and over again, was almost as silly too.. I guess I just felt like Maiden wasn't my music anymore. My music was "college rock" and hence, my devotion to the band quickly faded.

I sampled the next few albums after Seventh Son at the college radio station I worked at, but nothing grabbed my attention. I didn't blame Bruce at all for hanging it up. I did give Brave New World a few spins, and I have to admit, it's better than anything since Seventh Son.. but I'll never go back to being the fan I was back in the 80's.

That's cool Masonjar it sounds like we went through about the same things at around the same time as far as tastes in music go.

Its a bit hard to choose the best metal band as there is too many sub-genres to choose from. But then again Sabbath are seen as the ones who kickstarted it all and the original is normally the best (or at least up there).

Well this is a very controversial theme, but IMO there is nothing like old times, Zeppelin (considered by many the fathers of heavy metal, including me), Black Sabbath is also great a little bit later on, and of course from the new guys Metallica (old and new, excluding the Anger stuff), Maiden is also good (a little bit bored for my taste, but good).....

Moody Blues
Mammas and Pappas
The Turtles
