WHo is the best metal group in history?

darkangel,
i auditioned a used cd of opeth's last album, but the music was so sappy i put it back. sorry, don't mean to crap, but damnation is hardly metal. perhaps their earlier albums rocked harder.

even considering the crap they've put out recently (and this is a BIG consideration), i vote for metallica for two reasons: "master of puppets" and "...and justice for all". if only they had called it quits after cliff burton's death...

You are very correct in your observation, new album DAMNATION is a totally different direction for OPETH and in no way is representative of extreme style found on 1st 5 albums, not sure why they did it but I guess they wanted a progressive mellow album for a change.

Loyal OPETH fans will say it is still good, personally I don't like it.
It does appeal to progressive music fans but that is different style of music vs metal

If you asked metal bands such as Opeth, Nevermore, Iced Earth, etc etc who influenced them the most to playing their genre of choice more often then not they would say Black Sabbath, a few would say Judas Priest, but not a great number. There are good rumors that the inspiration for Spinal Tap was Black Sabbath. And Spinal Tap was supposed to be a representitive of the entire genre.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned:

UFO
Tool
Motorhead
Van Halen
Rainbow
Thin Lizzy
Early era Scorpions
etc., etc., etc...

I personally think that Black Sabbath is the greatest heavy metal band of all time. They were the beginning. Everything that follows was a variation on their theme, but all of the other bands mentioned by everyone else are excellent as well. I think that Tool is the band right now that remind me of Sabbath the most.

Yes.

No, seriously: define "real"? They played all their own instruments, they toured, they put out albums.

So, more accurately: mostly parody, but they were somewhat a real band, too. It's mostly about the film, but it is so much more than the film.

The best parody is the one with a bit of truth to it.

W3rd to Opeth.

Metallica has always been tasteless, they were just tasteless decent and different at the same time. People loved it.

I think Type-O Negative fits in this group, too. I know a lot of people hate them, but they have such a different sound.

Isn't Sepultura have been playing Nu-Metal for the last few years?

Megadeth.

My criteria takes into account the following:

* The quality of the groups catalogue. These guys released one bad metal album; two if you want to get nitpicky.

* The band was together at least 15 years.

* Proficiency playing their instruments as a whole. The classic lineup of the two Dave's, Marty Friedman, and Nick Menza were, and are, completely unsurpassed in this regard.

* Lyrics are important, and again, Dave Mustaine wrote some of the most articulate and sincere in the genre; they transcend it.

* The band continued to mature and improve, at least until the later stages of their career.

You're thinking Soulfly, Max's new band. Sepultura kept the faith, but without you know who they're tired and without direction.

I like MEGADETH because just when Metallica was begining to suck in the late 1980's Megadeth was putting out their best work so you could just switch from buying Metallica to buying Megadeth

I would say Megadeth has two great albums:
-peace sells
-rust in peace

two very good albums
-countdown
-youthanasia

then the rest are pretty average to me.

Rust and Youthanasia are my favorites, although I liked the unbridled ferocity and bitterness displayed on So Far, So Good... Cryptic was when the band began to go downhill IMO, with its overproduced, mainstream prog-rock sound, even though it had hints of thrash brilliance with "She-Wolf", "FFF", ect.
