Over the past few years of my life I have realized that I cannot think of the Greatest Metal Group in history. I love groups such as Disturbed, Korn, Metallica, System of a Down, and Static-X. But there are also the older Classic Rock groups that can be considered like Ozzy or Led Zeppelin. Who do you think is the best metal band in history?

I'm not saying they are the best, but when they were good they were. With albums like "Master of Puppets" "Metallica"(black Album) and "ride the Lightning" they ruled. I no there are better than them now. But I don't think anyone has ever been as good as they were. IMO.

If, after the Black Album, they had all joined Cliff Burton--or at least stopped recording--it would have been Metallica. However, they have squandered the last bit of respect I had for them (Haven't heard St. Anger yet).

So let's see...

I'll throw my vote to Iron Maiden.

You are asking tough question there, I have huge metal collection of many styles and for me at the top of the metal pyramid reresenting it highest point of evolution is:

OPETH

Their first albums through "blackwater park" incorporate entire spectrum of styles both musically and vocally from extreme metal through acoustic ballad sometimes all within one song fully exploring all possibilities metal has to offer..........in a word godlike.

Orchid
Morningrise
My Arms Your Hearse
Still Life
Blackwater Park

I definetly agree that Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Opeth are all good groups. I think I might have to go with Metallica though. Go back to the old stuff. By the way St. Anger is nothing like Metallica at all, pretty good though.

Metallica released too many crappy albums to take this place. Metallica (Black album), Load, Reload, S&M, and St. Anger were all crap. Led Zeppelin were great but that's really hard rock rather than metal. Black Sabbath with Ozzy was one of the best ever, but without him they sucked. All the Iron Maiden albums after Seventh Son of a Seventh Son were pretty much crap. Opeth is still too new.

I can't really say who is the best. There are so many different styles of metal that it would be unfair to judge one band of one style against another band of a different style.

That's funny: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was the last Maiden album I bought. That was about the time I stopped paying attention to the metal scene. Haven't much listened to any metal in quite some time, but Dark Angel's posts have almost convinced me to sample Opeth.

I still stick with my original vote: Iron Maiden.

And the winner is...Jethro Tull! Everyone remembers that little debacle, right?
