i disagree. that just means i'm going to have to pay $200/ticket to a scalper to get to see them. this'll probably be the last tour for the next decade where they play decent venus (i.e. small) too.

i don't get it though... i keep hearing their songs on KROQ, and i always wonder, what the hell do people see in them? the songs are simplistic.... just drums and guitar it seems... and a guy that can barely sing. i mean, yeah, the songs themselves ain't bad.... but hardly deserving of such praise. i mean, neither performer (it's just a guy and a girl right?) seem very talented. both can't be much better than mediocre musicians..... can someone explain to me what's so great about their music???

i heard that their shows are great.... but come on!!!

I'm not sure if they completely live up to the hype (actually I'm not even sure I know the hype) and a part of it may be being the opposite of the "over-produced" albums on the charts (current gen's "keeping it real", etc.). But how would you describe the Ramones, The Stooges, Pistols, Dylan, Public Enemy, etc.... or more basically the Blues, Rock, Punk or Rap revolutions? Complexity, number of instruments or members, or a good voice isn't essential for great music is it?

I think that is all image. I used to have three of the exact same fiberglass airline guitars I sold the on ebay around $300 the action on them was low but the sound was not top notch. Once I found that they play one I looked them up on ebay and they were selling for $2000 +!!! WHAT UP WITH DAT??? I guess some kids got their hands on Mom and dads credit cards.

i guess you've never heard any of the white stripes earlier albums: de stilj, white blood cells, etc..

jimi hendrix used to light his guitar on fire. stevie ray vaugn played a guitar he bought in a pawn shop. a band has very little to do with the "quality" of the instruments they play, in my opinion.

I am not much of a musician so I can't comment on how good they are. But I like what I hear. There are plenty of artist who can't sing and doesn't write their own stuff who sell even better than white stripes.

My friend who loves coldplay does not like white stripes. I am the opposite. Just a matter of preference I guess.

One more thing, does anyone else think the album sounds crappy? As in it's not "recorded" very well. I hear a lot of background noises...

elephant is probably the highest quality recording i've ever heard. all vintage tubed equipment was used in its production. i hear a chair creaking occasionally, but i really don't see what this has to do with recording quality when the whole sound is so organic and beautiful.

their other albums vary in quality though, all sounding analog though.. some tape hiss and such though.

It's my first "not over produced to death" cd, my next one being Ben Folds new EP which recorded his wife's phone call during their session. Not quite used to the "organic" quality of the sound just yet but I do like their raw energy.

You know the other thing. The thing as big as their non-over-produced rawness... The songs have a romanticism that's often missing in rock. Not cynical romanticism. Just romanticism. Listen to the lyrics. There's all the "trying to be your man" and "hand holding" and the like all over their albums. I'm not the first to point this out, but listened to as a whole, the White Stripes are almost revolutionary in this sense. A raw band that asks you to love instead of hate...
