I'm looking for a good white noise or sleep sound generator. So far, this Marpac model looks good. I would also like one that can generate other sounds (brook, rain, etc.) but they too often are looped and artificial sounding. Any recommendations?

lol, actually it's the baby who needs it to go to sleep--actually, more importantly, stay asleep. But I'd also like to use it when working from home.

Well I think buying a unit would limit you to the few sounds it carries. Why not get some sort of cheap boombox cd player, and buy various ocean/nature sound CDs? Then you could have an endless selection of noises. Though...I realize having to buy several CDs might be inconvenient. Maybe you could find some free sounds on the net, and burn them?

It's a good point. In fact the Squeezebox has a station that plays sounds, so that's one option.

How are the Sharper Image ones? I remember many models in the SI magazines long ago, maybe 8 years ago. They were all the rage back then, along with those tabletop lie detector gadgets.

"Aire Freshener provides ambient sounds, a CD player, simulated wind chimes, and more...all in a powerful and convienient tray icon! Ideal for "freshening-up" noisy work environments, use as a sleep aid, or just having fun!"

And it is FREE!
(well there is a request in the "About Aire Freshner" info page for a donation to a children's charity)

I second this program. I used it for a while. Now, I just open my window because it get hot at night, and the cars put me to sleep.
