Whis is most preferred for encoding?

I am going to be re-ripping a lot of my cd's and I am curious as to if I should use LAME or the Fraunhofer codec.

I am looking at ripping my cd's at a minimum of 256 kbps to a Sony Vaio pocket MP3 player. Also is VBR better then just an even rip at one level of MP3?

In the past I have been using Easy CD-DA Extractor. Any other programs that you guys would suggest?

If you search here...you'll find that most recommend EAC along with LAME to produce 192+kbps VBR files. I also use the Fraunhofer codec and have had no real problems with that either.

Experiment and use your ears on some favorite tracks to decide for yourself.
