I am currently in the process of purchasing my first pair of decent headphone and would like some honest opinions from people who actually know what they are talking about. Not only to take my money. I have done some research and have come to the conclusion that I like the Sennheiser HD212 or HD497. I would like some input on which is better. Any replies would greatly be appreciated. Thanks for you time.

I had HD212 Pros and I have HD497s.

All in my opinion...

Are you looking for a closed 'phone or an open one? The HD212 Pro is closed; HD497 is open. If open vs. closed doesn't matter to you (or you want open headphones), I'd personally go for the HD497s. The HD212 Pro has a _lot_ of bass that I didn't find very appealing; seemed a bit bloated and uncontrolled. the HD497s have much better bass in my opinion, and a smoother top end (the highs on the HD212 Pro, IIRC, seemed a bit harsh and fatiguing at times).

If you want more deatil and an overall more accurate sound pick up the 497s.

Also if you hurry eCost.com has them refurbed for $37.

I was wondering about purchasing a refurbished pair. Is it safe?

The hd497s sound better and the hd212s are closed and cheaper.

I owned the hd497's for a year and borrowed the hd212's for a couple weeks

For great detail, you could get a pair of Grado SR60s, but they are slightly our of your budget at $69.00. You could always try to get a pair of used ones.
