i'm trying to find a good reason to buy my 11th pair of headphones but my wife says i have too many already.

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=210835

one suggestion was to sell a few hwadphones first. so if you had a choice of just three pairs of headphones, which ones would you have and why?

my selection;

stax........ i can't remember what pair they were (or if they still make them) because it was along time ago.

beyer dynamic dt 990 (that's the pair i want to buy) i love the comfort and the overall sound isn't 'alf bad either, and i love the bass.

sennheiser hd 595 sure i know they're not the best but i found tthe sound to be smooth and pleasing.

please don't be too hard on my choices those are the first three that can off the top of my head

What is in your inventory right now?

Sounds like your wife is talking sense - I mean just how many pairs of ears do you have?.......

And before you round on me:-
Etymotic ER6 - kept in my car (just in case pair)
Grado SR60 - for my in-house listening
Sennheiser HD480 - general use around house
Sennheiser PX200 - used by my wife
Shure E2 - back-ups
Shure E500PTH - main phones for most occasions

I cant see a need for more than 5 or 6, but to each his own. I would sell a few pair to make room.

I have
Darth Beyers- closed all purpose
DT990- open all purpose
Stax 404- electrostats
Shure E500- portable
Vmoda Vibes- (on the way) back up for the E500's as portables tend to get knocked around a lot.

Here's my Trifecta -

Open Home Cans. Let this be the ultimate cans.

Closed Home Cans. If you live with others, this is a must, for both your sakes.

Portable Cans. You know you need em!

For open home cans, I say go for the best dynamic or electrostatic that suits your tastes. For me that ended up being the HP2 and the Lambda Pro. Yeah, I couldn't pick either/or, bah.

For portables, I got a sealed pair (K81DJ) and a nice open pair (HF-1) with nasty weather cans as a spare (KSC-75).

For closed cans, they are supposed to be Darth Beyers, but my sister stole em. FIE.

am very proud of myself..bringing my inventory of cans and collection of sorts of full open home can inventory down to 2 phones. I have heard and owned some decent highend offerings from Stax, Beyer, Grado, Shure, UM, Senn, AKG, AT, Sony,Ultrasone...electrostatic, dynamic, closed, open etc. Done seeking out the perfect closed backer, as even the bestsounding closed Sony,Beyer, and AT did not catch my fancy, and have instead discovered that I rarely enjoy listening in the house when it is too noisy to monitor anyway.
These are the keepers for home/critical listening..

HP-2
GS1000

portable..

MS-1
SR-60
KSC-75

..baby steps to the post office

I think it shows a lot of courage to list those Bose Triports although he could have easily left them out.

I like Jahn's practical approach too.

Shure E500....I'll never travel without IEM's.
Senn HD650....going balanced was the best move I've made. They ain't leavin'.
Tossup for the third spot. Right now I'd have to say the PS-1 but I'm hoping the 701's balanced will pry the Grados from my hands. I could use a cash infusion for the home theater and speakers that are next on my list.

Alright, this is very doable, and I think your wife it totally correct. You've got a lot of low and mid-range headphones that can definitely be sent off to needy buyers to help fund some proper upgrades. I think you're on a good path to try to narrow to a few key options.

If I were you, here is what I'd do. Let your sister and brother have the ones they've borrowed, it's the holiday season after all. Then, set aside the two you like the best from the current inventory, with an eye to covering different uses. I'm guessing it'll be HD25-1 and SR-125. Only sell these if you want to move up in the same function. SELL EVERYTHING ELSE, triports on ebay, the other stuff here maybe. You'll probably cover roughly the entire cost of your DT990, and your wife will probably be so happy that you can get away with replacing one of the others or adding a fourth soon after.

I basically took the same approach.

Open Home: HD600 or Woody 225s(CPads)
Closed Home: K271s
Portable: UM1

My beater/bad weather/etc. is the K26P.

I'd really like to get down 4 pairs but I haven't quite found the one open hp that works for me for everything.

I agree about the upgrading part, not the part about your wife being correct

. Reduce the number of headphones and move up the upgrade path. Jahn's suggestion below is very sensible.

From my inventory, my three choices would be AD2000, W5000 and ER4P/S.

if this is a personal question, here is my answer:
AKG k-1000

Grado hp2

STAX omega 2

i would also like to sneak a pair of cheap portables in. since 1 driver is good enough for any full sized headphone (save the k-340, which odly didnt make the list....) i will pick the etymotic er4s.

selection based on reasonable availablitiy. sorry kiddies, the grado HP1000 family headphones change hands more often than the L3000/sony r-10 or 010 quaila... i guess if i was FORCED to have a closed headphone i could work my magic on one of those 2.
