I've currently got a 30gig iPod that I use during a commute and at work. I also have some Etymotic ER4-P earphones that I'm extremely impressed with, the only issue being a slight lacking in bass.

I've read that amplifiers can often improve sound quality, along with the supposed noticeable improvement with the 4S adapter. So I was wondering, what suggestions people had?

I was originally considering one of the latest Supermini portables, or a JMT Meta42 based portable.

Anyone got any suggestions/thoughts? I'm also assuming that plugging an amp into the iPod using the line-out (thus avoiding the headphone amplification bits) would potentially provide a 'cleaner' source for the amp?

Anyway, your thoughts please

Given the Ipod has no "true" line out (although it can somewhat simulate one), and that you're using the Ety's, I really don't think it's really going to make a difference "which" amp you use. The fact that if you use one you'll get possibly a much fuller sound, but since there's no actual line out, I really don't think the type you get will really make a difference as far as sonics.

I could be wrong about that, but that's my estimation.

EDIT: I'm primalrily refering to the above in a stricly portable situation. With the line out on the dock, I'd say the Meta 42.

If you're also going to use the amp with other sources, I'd go again with the Meta42. To me it sounds better than the mini, providing a fuller bottom end as well as outstanding detail.

Ok, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure whether it would've been worth it with the iPod... I'm extremely happy with the sound from the ER4-P and was just wondering whether an amp + 4S converter would provide any substantial improvement, but from what I've been reading it probably wouldn't. At least not to the degree when going from the Apple earbuds to the Ety's

Mind you, I was checking out some Sony CD3k's on eBay the other day

I am currently using a 20GB Ipod, ety 4Ps, converter cable, and Headsave Transit (Meta42). 1st off, if you are looking for more bass, the converter cable actually reduces it but gives a more accurate sound and provides more detail. I prefer the sound of the 4S but some don't. Buy an amp without the converter buit-in so you still have a choice between the 4P or 4S.

I far as the sound difference, the amp extends the range of sound (deeper bass), give it more punch and more soundstage. Without the amp, the music sounds like it's in a staight line from left to right. With amp, the music sounds all around you, much more enjoyable and natural. The difference isn't as great as going from the earbuds to etys but it is there and is worth it to some people. It also can be a pain because you are now carrying around an extra box and making the Ipod less portable.
