I've got it narrowed down to...
AKG K240S
AKG K401
AKG K501
Beyerdynamic DT531
Audio Technica AD7

Which would you recommend? This would be for home listening, so an amp recommendation could be nice, too.
I listen to a lot of music, from metal to punk to ska to hip-hop. But I don't really listen to classical music or jazz... so recommend!

I see more bad than good said about the K240S, but then again a lot of people say it needs a good amp.

The DT531, I'm gonna say, don't go there, because i sorta want one, and they're hard to come by.

i'll tell you what i think of the k401 when mine gets here from austria.

I can definitely say the K240S was not too hot compared to my other headphones unamped. Amped they were a little better but I was unimpressed with the "coldness" of the sound.

For the K-501, it's not so much classical or jazz, but whether the music is acoustic or not. If you've got an amplified bass guitar, you're probably not going to like the way they sound. If you have an acoustic upright bass, recorded unamped and live, the K-501 is going to beat the snot out of every other can, except for maybe the K-1000.

If you're listening to a lot of non-acoustic music, like what you listed, you're probably going to hate the K-501. I haven't heard the other cans on your list, but I think it's fair to say that one of them will be much more to your liking.

But if your ear develops a taste for the acoustic, go get a K-501. It's like a baby K-1000. Yeah, that good.

As for an amp, go solid state. If you're looking for tight low-end impact, solid state does a better job of that than tubes do.

Some of the music I listen to is acoustic, but the majority isn't. I'm looking for a good all-around can.

A few more questions... what other Beyerdynamics are open and circumaural? And would you recommend Beyerdynamic for the type of music I listen to?
And I still would like to hear some feedback about the AD7.

proline 2500's or 2200's xD

with the 2500's you wouldnt need an amp after maybe 1000+ hours of burn in...

titanium takes FOREVER to fully burn in.

Senns are ugly and those prolines are out of my budget range.

Maybe I am still basking in the "newness" glow, but its hard to imagine a better looking HP than the HD 595. Maybe the sound sig is not for you, but its sharp to look at.
