LAME 3.97
The few times I encode to MP3 (or lossy at all) that is.

Go to that lamedrop link above you; the second uses the beta encoder. It's a great interface, you just drag and drop files/folders and it encodes them. There's also an ogg version.

Thanks. I have the "drop files here" lame box open with a specified output directory. I put a CD in my drive and drug a song into the box but nothing seemed to happen. Is there a guide to this thing somewhere?

Oh I see. You had specified simply an encoder but you need the ripper as well.

Look for a program called CDex. It's simple to use and its homepage will give you all the info you need to run it.

CDEX is a great, easy to use program. I've since moved on to ripping to FLAC using EAC so I have a nice lossless copy, then transcoding to MP3 using Foobar (Lame 3.97 v -1). Its a little more work, but I'm very happy with the end results.
