Which mp3/cd players can FAST SEARCH mp3's?

Good thing you don't like Sony cuz their MP3CD Player doesn't
FFWD thru mp3 tracks :\ I'm in the same situation as you my
friend. I return the damn player just cuz of that. I don't like feel
like starting over a two hour set just because I opened the CD
player lid (cuz it doesn't resume if you open the lid)..

BTW, what the hell is a 8hour mp3??

I've had two Philips MP3/CD players and they've both had fast forward and reverse within mp3 tracks. They both sound quite good too -- brighter than my Sony.

My Panasonic doesn't feature forward/reverse on mp3s.

My old(er) Rio Volt 100 can search forward or back, within an mp3 song. It is configurable from 1x to 6x speeds. I just updated its firmware from v1.09 (stock) to v2.10 and performance is greatly improved in alot of areas. I assume that the newer Volts can do this also, but I am not sure.

- how is the bass comparing to sony?
And what about sony - iriver comparison?

The two Philips units I have sound a little different, but both of them have a more open, clean sound compared to the Sony I have (D-CJ01). Sony portables seem to have a reputation for a somewhat dark sound (perhaps to compensate for their headphones, which tend towards an overly bright sound). If that dark quality is what you are referring to by boosted bass, then I don't think Philips should give you that problem. However, I don't think that all models from a given manufacture are necessarily cut from the same cloth. The Philips players that I have are 8cm MP3/CD players, the 401 and 431, respectively. Philips has recently released a bunch of new models that share the same specs as the 431's. The 431 is the brightest sounding portable I own -- perhaps a little too bright, but I prefer it to the Sony.

I haven't owned iriver, but I have owned RioVolts, which are supposedly manufactured by iriver. Personally, I didn't care for the RioVolt amp, which I found flat sounding and too weak to drive any but the most sensitive headphones. However, it seems that a lot of people around here disagree with me. In any case, bass bloat was not a problem with RioVolt.

In terms of sound quality, my order of preference for CD/MP3 players I've owned would be the following:

1. Philips
2. Panasonic
3. Sony
4. RioVolt

Let us know what you end up with, and how it sounds to you.

Thank you for your opinion.
My problem is that I have one of
the more expensive Grado's -
I tried Sony DE J 955 and gave it
to my cousin finally, the bass was
so boosted. I compared Sony DC J01and Panasonic SL-MP50 directly
(both without fast search through mp3's),
and Sony was the worse.I prefer anything but the Sony's now.
The sound of my Grado is bright itself,
so I do not bother about the bright sound,
the problem is this fast search feature,
and boosted bass.

Sorry for my english - I need this player
for learning your beautiful language
by listening to audio books.

Considering the quality of my high school French, I don't think I'm in any position to judge somebody else's English, and I hope I didn't come off that way. How did you like the SL-MP50, apart from the fast search? I saw it in a store window recently and was curious. I like the sound of my SL-MP35, but it's rather bulky. Have you checked out Audible.com for audio books? Their prices are great. And what, if I may ask, is your native language?
