Which is better for the Etymotics

I'm going to get Eymotic ER-4P headphones. I know that a headphone amp would be optimal, but I want to try them without an amp first. Which would drive them better, an iPod or the audio out from my laptop?

I've got an iPod and 4P's. The iPod alone does fine although I would prefer a bit more depth so I'm gonna try out an amp. While the iPod/4P combo provides extremely clean sound, I'm hoping the amp will bring out the bass a little bit more. When I hooked the home amp to the 4P's the sound was amazing.

When I used an amp (Meta 42) with the Ipod, that was what I experienced, a richer, fuller sound with a little deeper bass.
