I've gone through a few headphones this year and I'm happy with the HD 595 and HD 25-1 which are both staying, but I want to try something else. I listen mainly to hip-hop which means I NEED GREAT BASS impact, forward presentation and perfect mids. I don't like recessed mids. The HD 25-1 are particularly the right type of sound.

I'd like to get the AT A900's, since I liked the A500's, but it just seems like a waste getting headphones that don't need to be amped? I'd prefer some more power hungry muthas.

So I'm thinking Audio-Technica ATH-A900, Beyerdynamic DT 770/80 PRO or Alessandro MS-2? Decisions, decisions. Help!

I also wouldn't mind trying the Beyerdynamic DT531 and posssibly even giving the Senn HD 580/600/650 a better go.

Any ideas on how to spend my hard earned Aussie pesos?

Hey 3lusiv3 you already know what I'm going to suggest... MS-2s... detail, refinement, slam'in bass. You know you want them!

Why not take advantage of Headphonic's return policy and try them out. I did compare (briefly) the Beyer sound of the DT531 and DT440 and I liked them both but for a little more money you get "slam" from the Alessandros and a clearer less confused bass and better extended treble.

Okay, I admit it I like them. And if you really want to blow some money the MS-pros are lighter and some think even better. I listen to them the most.

Cheers,

TonyAAA, I had a feeling you'd appear, just not so quickly. Yes, those MS2's have been tempting me for ages and it's taken this long for me to accept that I would have to spend at least that much, although it has cost more in the long run, but that's how we learn and experience I guess.

Thanks for your input.

Or both!

I'm very much enjoying the Senn HD 25-1 straight out of my computer right now.

In my experience the DT770 has really recessed midrange and really colored vocals. If you are already happy with the HD25-1, which has exaggerated bass response, why not just keep it?

You could always try the HD650 if you wanted to experiment, but be prepared to invest a lot in an amp capable of driving them sufficiently.

If you want powerful bass and midrange which isn't recessed, that really leaves out most of the stuff I've heard except for the 580/600/650 series. Under these circumstances, you'll have to deal with very relaxed, but ultimately tonally correct, treble response. An exaggerated treble response will be in proportion to the lows and mids.

HI: The pro 770-80 are my favorite headphones at this time and they wouldn't be so if the mid range was recessed. I have over 200 hours burn in on them and find the awesome bass not to interfere with the mids and highs. I guess we all might hear differently.

Looking at the following graph and assuming the SR325 are similar to the MS2 and the DT990 are similar to the DT770, it's hard to pick but I like the extended bass and treble from the DT990, so the DT770/80 look inviting. I can't choose from graphs though.

I've had the MS-2 and the DT770 at the same time, both a stock 80 Ohm and a modded 600 Ohm. For Hip Hop I'd say - both are good. I know that doesn't help lol. MS-2 is in your face and scratches and the rapping is licking your eardrum. The bass is punchy, but the detail and highs are all there without being grainy.

The DT770 is the Kingpin of Bass. Its extension is even lower than the MS-2, and for Hip-hop, you need that subwoofer level bass, which the DT770 has. Amazingly its highs are also right there, although the 600 Ohm version was a bit piercing comparatively. My Headphile-modded 600 Ohm version had great mids, but the 80 Ohm stock was no slouch either - but it may have seemed recessed just because that bass was so huge.

At the end of the day, I would probably opt to get another pair of DT770s yet AGAIN lol. But it's a situational can for me - when I can't handle the bass anymore (it's not a fatigue issue, it's a preference selection) and want to hear a different type of track, I'll reach for the MS-2. In fact, I have a SR200 with HP1000 drivers coming soon, and I might have to make a decision of which to keep in the house. Whichever loses will probably end up in the sale forums for cash, for which I'll pick up the DT770 yet again (i need a closed can for practical purposes I realized), and give the rest of the cash to my wife as a sacrificial offering.

HI: How are you? When you had the 770 were they the 250 ohm? I have read that the 80 ohm has a better balance and mid range with smoother highs over the 250 770.
