OK, I've decided to get some more bass heavy cans to compliment my DT931's, and there are two main contenders that I can see....

So, which one between the Beyer DT770 and Senn HD590 will sound best, most bass etc.

Not sure the above image will work, but looking at it, the 590's appear to have just as much bass clout as the 770's, without having a recessed vocal range, and as trance lovers will know, female vocals feature quite a lot in trance music.

So, I can get both for an OK price, which one would you go for?

Are you locked in on only these two headphones? I liked both the CD-3000 and the HD600/cardas better than the DT770pro's for trance. I owned all these at the same time so I got to compare the three alot.

Not neccesarily locked in to those two cans, but I want some cans that really groove with trance music. The DT931s are nice "hifi" cans, but their bass is too restrained for my tastes, and I simply do not find that they groove anywhere near as well as my speakers.

Moreover, they need to be relatively cheap, i.e. less than £100 UKP, both of the HD590 and DT770 are. I am not prepared to spend a lot of cash. I had considered the 580 / 600 but if the sound of the 497's I own are anything to go by, I doubt I'll like those very much.

Looking again at headrooms graphs, it seems to me that the HD590 is quite a lot brighter than the DT931, which is already on the verge of what I consider to be acceptable in that respect. With the exception of the highest trebles, the 770 appears to sound more laid back, which is not neccesarily a bad thing for me.

Not even close. The 770 have WAAAAAAAAY more bass kick/clout/yourfavoritetermhere than the 590.

a lot depends on the front end source...

I personally still find the Sony MDR-V6 ok for trance, and whilst their treble is on the brighter side of neutral... it adds to the energy

How recessed do you want the treble to be? (thinking of Philips HP890 here)

I used to enjoy listening trance type of musics on sony mdr-v900 but after listening them on e5 I could not go back. Trance on v900 seems so dull and boring..there was no comparison with e5.

I don't know anything about the HA-1... Is it meaty? If so the DT770 Pro might be the last headphones you buy for bass. If it's not that powerful then the MDR-7506 or the Sennheiser HD25 would be a better choice. You can buy all 3 from Turnkey on Charing X Road (www.turnkey.co.uk).

I find the Sennheiser just on this side of over-bright, with the others crossing the line in my opinion when driven for bass. All have a slightly bloated yet still very bouncy bass for maximum effect. Also, the better the DT770's are driven, the better the soundstage gets... it can be really good. The 7506 (especially) and HD25 sound closed-in in comparison.

i personally found v6 very good for trance, they'r "harsh" hights and deep bass makes them good sounding for trance and tehno

Duncan, I dont want the treble to be too recessed, although the 770 appears considerably less bright than the 931, the benefit to that would be i could turn it up a little more (I dont listen at ear splitting volumes, but like it a fair volume).

Bangraman, your question of the HA-1, I dont really know if it can be described as meaty, it sure sounds very good with the headphones I have at my disposal right now, but I have not heard other headphone amps to compare. However, they seems to be quite well regarded, generally. I asked Jan Meier if he thought the HA-1 could drive the 770, and he said it could easily drive any Beyer. I assume Charing X Road is Lodnon? Unfortunately, that is too far away, and there are hardly any shops round here (Newcastle) that sell Beyers. However, I can get them for £90 delivered off the internet, which seems ok.

Its looking very likely i'll go for it.

mg head otl-h -> koss pro4aat is my trance setup of choice. or through my v900s for trance on vinyl. (partly because v900s live with the turntables but they still sound damn good to me)
