G'day. Well i have decided to bite the bullet and finally get some good headphones. I have narrowed it down to a few. i have a budget of around $200 and using them predominatly for use from cd sytem and ipod. I listen to acoustic music mainly with a bit of alternative and jazz thrown in.

The finalists:

AKG 501: Seem to get pretty good wraps. Could they be powered from an ipod directly though?

Audio techica: A900. Seem to be a favourite around these forums and offer excellent value for money

Audio technica EM9D or EW9? Seem to be very similar. what are the pluses and minuses of each. How good is the sound compared to A900's or AKG501?

Any avice would be appreciated.

Cheers

501 is an excellent choice for your musical tastes... unfortunately, ipod just won't do.

If you want cans to be driven from your iPod, you can scratch the K501's off that list. The A900's are much easier to drive, so I think that would be a better mate for your iPod and CD player.

However, if you plan on getting an amp down the road (which you should!), I'd give the K501's a second look.

i second the porta pro. just got them and the sound is amazing. clear mids and treble. bass is a tad overwhelming though. the porta pros should suit your music taste.

I wouldn't recommend the portapros unless you like music to sound like it has bass boost on all the time and like to lose hair (Portapros take out strands of my hair =P). The A900s can be driven fine by the ipod but they aren't portable at all, but they are "transportable"
