I am wondering which DAC the head-fi community would recommend with the HDVA 600 and HD800 combo. I currently am using an ordinary Bifrost DAC, but I am looking for something more to fulfill the amplifier and headphones I have. I had heard that the Gungnir Multibit is an incredible DAC and is a bit on the warmer side with stunning detail and soundstage. That is the DAC I am most likely going to get, but I am wondering if there are any other suggestions that you guys have that may be better with my current combo. The DAC has to be Balanced along with being at the most $1,400-1,500, but nothing more than that.

IMO don't get any expensive DAC for the HDVA 600. I'm also using the HD800 and HDVA 600, and because the Senn amp is not a particularly transparent amp DACs make for minuscule difference. I can't even tell the difference between my Benchmark DAC1-USB and Metrum Octave Mk.1 using the HDVA 600 - which could be both a good thing or a bad thing.

I've quoted this post by Purrin over and over again;

HDVD600/800 - I had my doubts, but great match with HD800. very refined sound, but probably lacks the slam the better amps have. balanced mode a must for staging, layering, separation, openness. not an exceptional amp, but very solid choice considering price. HD800 is smooth with this amp. I found the amp circuitry to have its own sound which allows the benefit of using a variety of sources without too many differences. This is a good thing at the price level.

I'm about to sell one of my DACs. If I were you, I'll keep the Bifrost. Purrin himself told me he could barely tell the difference between using his onboard computer DAC and extravagant, exorbitant DACs with the HDVA 600.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying the HDVA 600 is a bad amp. Because it is not. Far from it. But it is also far from being a transparent amp. Pleasing sounding, yes, but not transparent.
