Hi guys!

I've been searching for a new pair of headphones for my Sony MZ-N10 MD. Actually my first choice was to go with a pair of Sony MDR-v6/7506, but found out that it would be too expensive to import to Denmark (where I live), somewhere near 180$! For that price I can get something better! So here I am to seek advice from you.

I need a pair that would sound good unamped on my minidisc and laptop. I’ve found some candidates but don’t know which one to go with.

1.Sennheiser HD600 (195 €)
2.Sennheiser HD580 (158 €)
3.Beyerdynamic DT 770 (169 €)
4.Beyerdynamic DT 880 (222 €)

I’m going to use them for transportation between school and home, therefore I would go for the DT770 but since I’ve never heard an open headphone before I can’t say if an open pair is out of the question. Before I come to that I would like to know if any of the pairs can be driven unamped.

About the open pairs, can they be used in noisy environments? Do they isolate a bit, how much noise goes through the headphones? How loud is the music to the one sitting next to me?

I mostly listen to rock and pop, sometimes a little techno. Which one should I choose? Or do you have some other suggestions? My only criteria are that they have to be available in Germany or inside Europe.

Unless you want to buy an amp too, you may want to look at other models. I'd recommend closed too, since opens leak and bug others.

Sennheiser HD-280's would work well as portables, they don't need an amp and they're closed, so you won't bug anyone else.

I don't know how widely they're available in Europe, but Etymotics are perfect for that...if you don't mind the in the ear canal thing.

Sony D66 Eggos are made as portables, they're semi-open, meaning that some sound leaks through, so you hear the train announcements and still don't bug other people.

The A-T A900 would work, as long as you don't move around too much while wearing them. They're big and fit pretty loose.

How come you must find a dealer in Europe? If you're thinking about taxes I think most dealers are willing to lower the price on the invoice for you if you ask them to.

I mean if you buy some headphones that cost $100, most companies will not mind writing the value as a lot less and/or as a gift so you don't have to pay taxes. Just make sure it's under the limit for taxing that you have in you country.

None of your nominations are going to be good with a portable (unamped).

For portable, closed use, especially in Europe, I recommend the Sennheiser PX 200.

Are they any good? I mean they seem to be so small. I thought size matters!

How about with a super mini amp v6, is there sufficient power to drive the above cans?
