I've decided I'd like to trying owning an Audio Research preamplier next. Can those with personal experience with ARC preamps recommend the best model to me? I'm going to go used, and my absolute limit is $1,200. Thanks for your help.

Your making a good choice. The two I've heard are the LS 16 MKII, and the LS 25 MKII. The 16 is a really good pre-amp. I have heard it in a friend of mines system for quite a while. I have another friend that just got the 25 and is very happy with it. So much so that he now also bought the Audio Reseach CD3 as his source. I think either of these would be good pre-amps. I don'r no how much they bring in the used market.

Are you looking for a tube or solid-state pre-amp? Either way, ARC makes some great products, especially their pre-amps. If you are looking for a solid-state pre-amp, the LS3 is an excellant model and can be had for > $700.

I do not know where you are at, but my favorite store in all the land has two ARC pre-amps for sale right now.

I know that they ship all over, and nearly all of their stuff is in terrific condition.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

I've always wanted to get into tubes and I think Audio Research appeals in part because they offer you tubes without a lot of fuss. From what I've read, their refined output stage lets you get up to 10,000 hours from a set of tubes and that sound fantastic (especially if you locate some beautiful vintage tubes you like). So, yes, I guess I am looking for a tube ARC preamp. If I can't find one within my budget (I'm hoping with luck and patience I might score a LS 16 MKII, Tom Hankins, that looks like a beauty, thanks for the rec) then I'll have to settle for an LS3, Peter, but I'd still be please as punch with one of those units! I'm about to go check out the SP8 right now, Joelk.

Any other suggestions in the ARC line?

Good luck with whatever you decide. All the choices look good.

Years ago I purchased used units of LS-15 and LS-3 and incorporated them in my two systems, have been extremely happy with them. LS-3 is a very good buy if you can locate a good unit. The only small complaint I have is the volume controls go in steps that is not fine enough for my taste.

Enjoy,

Locating an ARC tube pre should not be that hard. Make sure that you check Audiogon often, and perhaps try contacting Audio/Video Logic in Iowa. They sell both new and used ARC products.

Should you buy a vintage SP8 or SP6, you'll want to be aware of the mute switch, sometimes nicknamed the "destruct" switch. This can cause an amazing transient pop to the power amp and speakers. I turn mine on, leave it in mute for at least five minutes, and then take it out of mute. This way there's no problem. I once had VTL basics that didn't like this turn-on pop at all.

For tuberolling, I highly recommend Uncle Ned at Triode electronics (www.triodeel.com). I've done business with him for years and he's one of the true gentlemen who supply our hobby.
