EDIT: If anyone would like my to compare these with cans I currently own or have owned, just ask in this thread.
I've been jamming out to my new 250 ohm DT990 the past two days. I bought them used from a fellow member who has given them about 100 hours of burn in. I don't know if they need much more, but it seems adequate to start making judgments.
First off, I am really enjoying them. They are fun and involving. A near perfect balance of AKG and Grado sound (comparing to K601 and the many Grados I have owned). Better all around than the K601. Not as sharp or clear as a 325i, but this can be a good thing depending on the music.
I like these as much or more than the Darth Beyer V1 I used to own, providing that my memory hasn't altered my impressions too much. They are not as attractive, but for a fraction of the cost I'm happy. The case they come with is also very practical, although I would have liked to see some foam padding on the top/lid part of the case.
The two most noticeable attributes are the highs and bass. (I know this has been said before.) The bass is incredibly good. I can literally feel it hit the sides of my face and rumble my jaw and skull. Now for the treble. Ouch. I now understand the "sparkle" other members have described. While listening to several jazz albums with an emphasis on drums, the cymbals hurt my ears. It doesn't sound bad, but it is not pleasing to my ears. The same happens with Hip-hop electronic noises and Classical trumpets and some string pieces.
My source and amp combo might be considered on the bright side. However I like them for all other purposes, so they will stay.
Now do I continue my search and auditioning? Sell off all of my cans and get a RS1
? Consider getting the DT990 recabled? (from Larry with Copper or something warmer?)
I think if I could tame the highs with a recable I would definitely consider it, but I have not experimented much with different cables to know that I could hear a difference.
Selling everything for a RS2 or RS1 is also tempting. I know I like the Grado sound, but I don't know if an RS1 would sound 350+ more dollars better with my system.
