Where To Download Lossless Music
Sep 3, 2016 at 5:24 PM Post #151 of 158
Canali -- have you checked out 7Digital for music downloads? I'm not sure if it's in Canada, but they have a big library...very modern (instead of just classic rock and whatnot)...and a lot of stuff is available as singles, not just albums.

Also, Flactunes is what I use to convert FLACs to ALAC.

i was told that flactunes is strictly for mac users....wouldn't apply in my case
( told this from an apple website)

i have a windows laptop that i would rip to or download flac to...then move to my ipod touch 6
so question:
will dbpoweramp do both?...rip cds, download flac and then convert flac files to alac as well, and not lose any music data?

so i am going to start ripping cds as well as will start to buy from 7 digital.
(hence my thread on cleaning/maintaining cds below)

Yes dbpoweramp does it all.  I use Linux on my main rig, and could use command-line or other utils for ripping / conversion if I wanted to.  I still use my paid copy of dbpoweramp (using the wine emulator so it runs under Linux)

Great software (dbpoweramp)

thanks Brooko...
interesting....so i buy 2 flac downloads from 7 digital.
also bought the dbpoweramp R16 latest version.
initially I had issues downloading it with norton security which rejected it 6x,
saying it was insecure and a bad program..sheesh...finally had to make it 'trusted'
to allow it to take.

HDTracks seems to have the most popular releases.  I haven't had any issues buying from them.  It would just be nice if they let you retrieve back purchases like iTunes does.  I recommend getting some DVD-R's and backing up your purchases onto them.

Anyway, make sure you review a release to death before you buy from there.  I have found many that really aren't a huge step above a CD when I listen to them.

I would start buying from iTunes if they ever went to Apple Lossless for everything.  I doubt they will though until we have much larger capacity iPods or everybody has extremely fast internet connections to their mobile devices for streaming.

Dont you think its much wiser to buy the CD itself rather than downloading from the those mentioned websites. I'm thinking at least I have the original cd and just ripping it to my player and dont bother to touch the original cd anymore. Have'nt had the chance to buy online but I'm contemplating of starting my collection that way. What can you suggest? Thanks.

I have a large CD library (mostly classical but with a substantial number of jazz and rock titles), all of which I have ripped.  I still buy downloads from time to time.  Sometimes the download is cheaper, sometimes the CD is hard to find or doesn't even exist.  If you believe that hi-rez can be audibly superior (a debate I do not wish to get into - but you should decide for yourself), there are hi-rez releases only available as downloads.

These days for classical, CDs are generally the way to go as the record companies keep repackaging their back catalogs in less and less expensive boxes.

By the way, all my rips and downloads are backed up twice.
