Ah well, get the MAD decoder plugin to replace the winamp mp3 decoder then

wallijonn, thanks for the advice... but the ripping isn't my «problem» – I use Audiograbber (freeware) –, rather Winamp's different reproduction of MP3 and Wave.

Thanks, Joe – the MAD decoder really helps! Now (high-bitrate) MP3 and Wave sound the same in terms od frequency response. I guess MP3 reproduction now is a trace less bright than before, isn't it? Anyway, I'm satisfied.

I'd always thought the improvement over the stock encoder was just a myth??

I think it will be a long time before my computer system would be up to par for me to spot such subtleties though

Joe...

...I wouldn't say the sound is better now (I was already happy before), but the slight difference in frequency response between MP3 and wave with Winamp has disappeared. Note: there wasn't any with mplayer, e.g.

Well, sounding closer to original = better in the case of compression formats...

If there were an original sound to compare to, this would be true of audio in general too... sigh
