I am looking to buy a set of cans for my 10g Ipod. I have been eyeing the sr60. I don't have an amp and I wont't be getting one anytime soon. I want to spend under 125.00 for a set of new cans.

Do you recommend something above the sr60's for my situation?

Where can I get the best price and good service for a new set?

Should I get new pads and which ones?

Thanks

I think it depends on the style of music you like.

I've used the SR40s, and 80s on the ipod for all around music and they work pretty well.

I usually use the MDR-V6, as it sounds pretty good with dance / house music (lots of bass) But they suck for classical or jazz.

From what I have read at headroom and here the sr60 are better than the sr80 without an amp.

The more I keep reading the more I want to buy I am now looking to get the er6 and the airhead total.

Now I am just plain confussed on what is worth it and what isn't. I mean just how much better can the er6 and the airhead total($130+$160) set sound over the sr60 ($70) alone. I have never heard anything better then the koss headphone I have now. Is it really worth it?

Hm. I'm not the best person to answer this but I will try to help. For what the TA costs you should look around and message some of the people that make META42s and ask them about fixing you one in the Serpac H65 case, KurtW and JMT to name a couple. The ER-6 are great headphones but if you were going to just use them on the iPod and get an amp just for them then you should just go ahead and get the ER-4P. As for www.headphone.com and rating the SR-60s above the SR-80s without an amp, read the reviews on hear and on headwize.com about that, the iPod puts out alot of power compared to most of todays portables. Comparing the ER-6s or ER-4ps to the SR-60s also brings in the isolation, the ers are really isolation while the SRs let everything in and out. Hope I helped

i've tried the ipod > Total AirHead > SR80s

The sound is not that good. It doesnt sound natural.

your best bet is to get a can that sounds good straight from the ipod headphone jack. Luckily for you, there are many, many different cans that meet this qualification.

personally, I've tested these combos and I think they work great.

ipod + V6
ipod + SR40
ipod + SR80
ipod + ER-4s (yes, 's') -- I wore these on a plane for 3 hours straight and I really enjoyed the sound.

The Sr60's match up really well with the iPod. I've used and enjoy this combo. Headroom is a great place to buy the 60's. You might want to try your local audio shops. If they are going to have headphones. They will probably have the 60's.

You sound like a perfect canidate for team
Eggo! Just use the search function and look up eggo or d66 and see what everyone has to say about these great cans(for portables and even homeuse). Xin at fixup.net is working on an inline amp designed for the Ipod which you may want to look into as well. Hope this helps.

Not true really. I own both the 60's and 80's, the 80's sound just fine right out of any source, including my MD walkman. The 80's have more bass and the highs seem a bit tamed thanks to the extra bass response. Where do you plan on using these headphones? In the house, train, outside? Where do you live?

The cord on the Grado headphones can be considered cumbersome and the build quality is not the best, so they need some care.

I live in Bloomington, IL. I will be using the ipod and cans at home mainly. But I want to ba able to go on car trips and the rare airplain ride with the equipment.

About how much does the meta42 cost?

I am looking at from what I know right now (which isn't much).
My main goal is vaule. Not the best or really cheap. What do I need to buy to have respectable sound?

Cans
------
sr80
ep6
ep-4s

Amps
------
Total Airhead
meta42
Xin Super Mini amp V5

The ER-4P sound great from a portable without an amp, the ER-4S basically require an amp on most portables, ER-6 greatly benefit from an amp. PM KurtW and JMT about the META42, I think one can be had in the Serpac translucent case for around the price of the Total Airhead and will sound much better. The ER-4S and the META42 are probally gonna sound the best out of everything you listed.

The iPod sounds great with out an amp. I use it a lot with Ety 4P's. If I use the META portable I use the 4S adapter cable. The Grados sound really, good straight out of the iPod too.

Just wanted to point out, since the ipod doesn't have a line out your better off not wasting your money on an amp for it. By plugging an amp in the headphone out on a ipod (or any other source) all the amp is doing is increasing the volume but not the sound quality. You should definitely order from

www.headphone.com

if your not happy with your order, you can always return it.

Airplane ride? Scratch off the Grado's, those leak sound a lot and you wont be able to hear squat since their very open. Looks like the ety's may be your thing.
