Where does the MG Head OTL go?

Still being lazy, cut and pasted from our chat...

Neruda says:
I know there are different types of distortion, but no distortion is any more accurate than the other. was that one problem you noticed?
kwkarth says:
well, fact is that some types of distortion ARE more objectionalble than others
kwkarth says:
and tube amps tend to produce even order harmonic distortion
kwkarth says:
ss amps tend to produce odd order distortions
kwkarth says:
odd order distortion is much more objectionable sonically
Neruda says:
well there's a whole lot less of it! *pouts*
kwkarth says:
so, if the distortion type is not specified, a tube amp spec’d at .2% distortion could indeed sound cleaner than a SS amp spec’d at .001%
kwkarth says:
BUT...different topologies produce different distortions ...
kwkarth says:
some of the newer OTL designs do indeed produce third or odd order harmonics...bad mojo
kwkarth says:
so there are LOTS of things to consider, but bottom line, what you said originally is right on... Good sounding SS amps are generally way more affordable than good sounding tube amps

'nuff said...

And kwkarth manages to bury a generalization beneath another generalization. I like the MG Head more than the Little. I think that's how this whole thing started. I like it more than the Creek, too. I don't care what the spec is on paper or what the sum average suckiness is and for all practical purchasing decisions, you shouldn't either.

Good for you Kelly! Buy what sounds good to you. That's what matters. We're the ones that have to live with our purchases!!

I'm not sure what the message here was. My point was that what you have to live with is how the amp sounds to you, not with how the amp specs out on a sheet of paper. The guy asked where the MG Head ranked. I've listened to the MG Head and comparably priiced units and have an opinion on the matter. It seems that you guys only have an opinion on how it SHOULD sound based on what technology is used. Have you heard the amp? Have you compared it with similarly priced amps? If so, where do you rate it?

It never has, but then there are Head-Fiers that would argue with a brick wall.

We're actually doing that in the DAC thread.

Even Mr. Tuberrific doesn't think the MG Head beats the Cosmic? That's bad.

Looks like getting it for $175 is not as big a deal as I want

From what I've heard, the Premium little comes close to the cosmic. I'll have to hear it for myself soon, but I'm repeating what a few people have said.

A LOT of people say that the cosmic > MG Head OTL. . .

I think you guys know where I'm going. If A=B, and B>C then A>C.

Kelly's right, solid state amps do have distortions, but let's look at some numbers.

Antique Sound Lab MG Head OTL
price: $329. Max distortion: .8%

Creek OBH-11SE
Price: $349. Max distortion: .05%

Throwing a hybrid into the mix, you get this :

Musical Fidelity X-Can V2

THD : <0.015% 20Hz-20kHz unweighted

Best of both worlds maybe?!

And yet you still hear people say that the XCan V2 is an overpriced piece of *****.

Well, maybe with the stock tubes.....

but, these Edicrons that I have are letting this unit really sing

Might just get me interested in tube-rolling all the time

With the wrong cans. yes it can be.
With the 580/600 however it can really sing.
A perfect example of system synergy.
