HD820 does everything right for me, with the huge plus of being closed back.

Previously owned: Sennheiser HD800 & HD650, Hifiman HE500, Focal Elear, BeyerDynamic DT880, AKG Q701, Smeggy Thunderpants, Fostex T40RP (BMF DBV#3)

HD280 PRO

I have the following headphones:
Sennheiser HD280 PRO(Old version)
Sennheiser HD650
Ultrasone HFI-680
Shure SRH-940
I also recently ordered the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b

I like the way you think, LithosZA. :)

I'm sure there's better soundin stuff out there. But the 250 ohm Beyer DT-770 + amp + EQ is workin very well for me right now. I just wish it came with a straight, detachable cable (preferably two-sided), and better 1/4" adapter though. And had a little less of a dip in the upper-mids.

Haven't really used enough open-backs to have an opinion on those.

HD650. And this is from someone that owns Utopia, Clear, Elex, Stax 007 and L700 in various vintages, and a ton of other stuff besides. HD650 sees 90% of the head time and is ideal for daily listening.

If I had to take a second headphone, I'm actually not sure, The Utopia, SR-007, and L700 all make a pretty good case for themselves. But they wouldn't see the majority of head time as long as HD650 was around. However there are times when 650's technicalities aren't enough and you want something better, so it's good to have variety.
Interesting. I love my HD650s, but they lack detail, have a funky imaging problem, and at times have a veiled sound for certain types of music. I love my HD650s for small combo Jazz and Bossa Nova. I like my HD600 for most other genres of music especially classical. But, when I got my HD800S and properly amped it up, I listen to them far more than the HD650 and HD600.

What gets the majority of my listening time are my Vision Ears VE8 IEMs. They just sound so good with most music. Warm sound signature. I prefer them to my HD650s.

I would like to find an overear open back headphone that sound like the VE8s in a full sized open back can.

Also, I'd like to find an IEM that is the HD800S for in ear monitors.

So today, if I could only have one headphone/IEM, it would be the Vision Ear VE8 IEMs.

AudioQuest NightHawks and Owls. I have other headphones that have their own unique strengths and qualities, some come very close being my favorites, like the Fidelio X3s and Sony MDR-Z7s, but the NightHawks give me the most musical and euphonic pleasure. And they are extremely comfortable.

I may actually have to change my mind now that I have a tube amp. My 6XX with the Darkvoice sounds sooo good. The HD600 does sound good with tubes but not as good as the 6XX.
