I just got the Sony MDR-EX51 LP ear buds, and want to know what the difference between them and the EX71's? I got these becuase some people said they sound amazing (they were using an iPod and I am using a Sony discman).

The bass isn't at deep as I thought it would be for $60 ear-buds. So the EX71's have more bass? what's the difference between them (other then the EX71's are segmented)?

I still have time to exchange them.

And no I can't afford to spend $200 on ear buds at this time (maybe in 5 years).

You could try asking the mfr.

i have bought the 71s and tried out the 51s.

the 71s were broken in via 3 days of playing nonstop music into them.

the 51s were a store's demo version (actually the owner's set). i guess it's safe to assume they were broken in.

i do not have exact specs on them, but the 51 is meant to be a budget version of the 71.

to my ears, the 5 did not suffer as much from the overdone headache inducing bass of the 71. it had a clearer & more prominent (read: less recessed) midrange but the same screechy highs.

my recommendation? avoid both. expensive and simply not worth it. i have since sold off my 71s and i couldnt be happier with their replacement, the px200.

I looked at the specs on-line and ask the Sony Store (were I got them) and they said the only difference was that the 71's were segmented.

to get good bass out of them I need to set it to max on my disman (EN510).
