What's the best place to purchase a Lavry black DAC?

At this point, I don't think you're going to find a vendor who has it for less than MSRP, given that it's still pretty new and that demand is high and supply is low. I'd just get it from a place with a good return policy, in case you end up not liking it.

I'm waiting for Iron Dreamer to get tired of his DA-10 and suddenly has an epiphany that AQVox is "IT." Or, he could decide DA-10 is the bees' knees and decide to sell the AQVox. Either way, I announce first dibs

They ain't both gonna stay. I'm still busy unraveling their differences, though.

I'll bet you there'll be larger audible differences if you compare them in a full-range speaker setup, extending to at least mid 20Hz. I would offer services of my speaker rig if you didn't live so darn far...

You better hurry up and decide b/c my finger gets itchy easily these days every time I see a Meitner or Dodson 218 on Agon, the last 2 DAC's that truly "wow'd" me...

So the Lavry Black is comparable to the Meitner or Dodson?

I better stop visiting this forum before my wallet takes a major hit -- those Meitner's and Dodson's are $$$.

Hey, hey, that's how rumors get started. While I can't positively say "No" to that question b/c I have not A-B'd Lavry to Meitner/Dodson in the same system, preferably speaker-based, IME so far I don't think so. If I buy the Lavry ($1000 new!), it'll be because it sounds good enough for musical enjoyment and b/c it's a ridiculous bargain compared to Meitner and Doson, both of which cost 7-8X that of Lavry.

I will say that with true greatness like Dodson 218/Meitner DCC2, there are special qualities that go way beyond frequency balance, clarity, bass, smoothness, etc. The great ones have microdynamic aliveness and sense of total authority/ease that can hit you over the head like a sledgehammer.

If I wanted to afford one of these, I would have to wait 'til after tax season and/or wait until Dodson DA219 or Meitner DCC3 comes out

Someone should compare the LavryBlack to the Meridian GO8. Not quite as pricey as the Meitner, etc., but I'll bet they'd be competitive. The Black does use a custom FPGA digital filter like the GO8, the Black has a better DAC chip, and both have sophisticated schemes to deal with jitter. Also, a lot more people own the GO8 than the Meitner, so a comparison would be more likely to actually happen.

I was hoping you would say yes.

I am in the market for a DAC for my computer rig, but somewhat limited budget wise.

Thanks for the insight.

For what its worth I felt the SACD-1000/Meitner DAC6e significantly outperformed the G08 when I compared the two. My previous trial was the Orpheus system hooked up to each source.

I only hope the Lavry sounds as great as the G08. It would be a much cheaper replacement for me

I just meant competitive with the GO8. The higher end stuff, Meitner, dCS, etc. is a realm I don't know much about (and really am not that interested in, but that's just a personal thing).
