Have you got an amp yet? If not, I seriously suggest you to try buying the Onkyo CR-305X (which I got) or CS-209 (which looks to be pretty much the same) minisystems. Packs a CDP and speaker amp into the size of your average larger headphone amplifier. Sounds terrific, the speaker amp can drive anything--and cleanly too, after you build the Impeder(tm) (http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...hlight=impeder). My Senn HD580 have never sounded better

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Actually, I have a mid level meta42 built by jmt coming in a week or so, so I'm just thinking about a receiver and a cd player. I will check out everything u guys have posted so far.

Fry's has a yamaha receiver on sale this week, I don't know if it's any good or even the price actually, but I think it's pretty cheap.

CD players don't usually come with headphone jacks, do they? The jacks are usually found on the receiver.

Anyone done any comparisons between these 3? I can't find anything on the onkyo

Both the jvc and technics seem to be really great, though they said that the 3d soundstage of the jvc is nonexistant. I don't know yet about the technics though. Magic77, how is the 3dsound stage on the technics?

People mention the Denon DCM-370 a lot. That can be had (refurbished) quite easily for around $100 + s/h on ebay. Sometimes, even less. I contacted one of the more common sellers of this unit directly, and he said he would sell to me for $90 + $22 s/h. I haven't followed up on that, yet, however. If you want his id, send me a PM or email.

Regarding the Denon: I'll pass on that. There have been a lot of problems reported about the player skipping with age. Without a doubt, that was why these refurbished models were returned. I've had more than my share of this problem with sony cd products already. It's unbelievably annoying. I don't think I'm willing stick my neck out and take a chance on a problem like this.

Jackangel, what about the technics? It seems to have good reviews all around.

Though I must say that the denon's specs + hdcd is very tempting.

Very tempting indeed...

Doesn't refurbished mean the buyer returned it for problems and it was fixed?

Referbished means that the owner returned it. It generally does mean that there was a problem with it, but also the problem could have been missing equiptment..such as a remote or cable or manuals. Also if someone returns something they used, it can be sent back to be referbished.

However I try to stay clear of most referbished items since I've had problems with the one's I've gotten (especially with computer monitors)
