As someone thats never heard an ortho before but is constantly tempted but the fantastic reviews and high price tags....what makes a planar "better" than a dynamic. Even better may not be the best word what can a ortho do that a dynamic cannot? Ive always been curious..I mean and eventually I will probably find out for myself and get some..but in the meantime...

The drivers are almost always larger so they move more sound.  The diaphragm on a planar is also much thinner so it has less mass.  This lends the driver to greater speed.  This can easily be seen in the square wave response curves below.

See how the LCD-2 has less decay in the 50 Hz square wave response?

Another great benefit is that most planars have a very linear impedance curve making them easier to control over the frequency spectrum.

Not all dynamic problems fluctuate as badly, but many have a very frequency dependent impedance.

The drawbacks are cost, size, and often soundstage.

The HE-500 and LCD-2 Bamboo are a few of my favorites for under $1k.

Yes very fast was what I always knew, they usually have very good bass for an open headphone right? soundstage is one thing Im after since I do use my phones to game with but music is my primary concern. There is a place about an hour from me...I may go audition some.

Its just inthe grand scheme..for me at least..for the cost they better be as close to end game headphones as Im going to get....
