I need some help deciding what will be my final pcdp. I now have the SL-CT 570. I would like true "line-out", with an equalizer if possible. It will definately need anti-skip. How about some units that are proven performers.

inthused..

Do you need the EQ to run THROUGH the line out, or just as an option if you need to go it without an amp sometime?

I'd suggest the D777 if the EQ doesn't need to go through the line out.. otherwise??????

Hello Duncan, and thank you for your help. I would want the EQ in the line out. Is that making things more difficult in locating one? Also, I should say that I don't "want" to spend too much on the player. By that I mean I can't at this time see spending over $2-250.
I hope that is more than enough to aquire a quality sounding player with some of the extra comforts they offer.
Please tell me if I am out of line with my thinking.
(This will be used with a cosmic amp, and Beyer DT880's)

hi inthused, the 550 has EQ enabled in the lineout... but then it's not so-called "true lineout"... however, AFAIK, there isn't any "fake" lineout at all... u can view my explanation in this thread ... somewhere in the middle...

however, i'm not sure that whether $180 is still in ur budget... all i tell u is that i'm pretty impressed with the sound of 550 so far... [EDIT] especially the lineout...

Hi,
I would stay away from iRever product, if you want a true line out. I had the original slimX and the line out was not very good at all.

I would hunt for Sony D-311, D-515, D-555, and D-802 for that type of features.

hi purk, as i explained in another thread b4... there isn't any fake lineout at all... u'll definately know this if u study most of the current DAC chips on the market... the older DAC chips don't have the digital volume control built-in so that's y most of the older PCDP used rotary volume control... this is simply means that the part of the volume control circuitry is shift b4 the output of the DAC in newer chips...

Also the 550 is totally different from the previous models... they used different chips in it.... so u can't compare the previous model with the current models...

just my 2 cents...

If you're going Sony old school, for portable... remove the suggestion for the D555 that Purk suggested...

...Its pretty good as deskbound, but to the best of my knowledge there is no external battery pack for it, and with BP2EX batteries being all but extinct...

You guys are being very helpful. It sounds as though I am looking for an older model but not the 555. The 777 would be fine except for the no EQ with the line out. Maybe I really don't need it as I haven't had the chance to hear one so I can't say. I do know that with my Panasonic SL-CT570, playing different cd's will result in using either the normal selection,or the xbass. Some recordings sound better on one but not the other. I never use the train or live mode. So you can see where I am concerned about a line out without an EQ.

[so]hai_ , I will review the thread you suggest but I think the older models are still KING from all I have read.

Maybe I'm looking for something that isn't out there.

I am confused.

I have a 570 and the effect of EQs shows via the lineout. So do u want to have EQ settings (instead of EQ presets) on the PCDP or what?

I use a Sony D-E805 which has a digital out as well as line out and sounds pretty good with an airhead amp. It has an alloy lid, ESP-2 and some DSP features (which sound like crap). I'm sure one of these wouldn't go for too much.

The D-E905 would be a sweet player if you found one but it would probably cost more than the 777.

Hi Canman,

How does your Sony D-E805 compare to the D-E905? I haven't heard the D-E905 though I've heard great things about it. I have the D-E775; it sounds pretty good. I'm wondering if the D-E805 would be a significant improvement. Any feelings?

hey amadeus, I prefer the line out from my D-E805 to the D777. Overall the 805 sounds a little more clear and coherent than the D777, with better separation of instruments. I have never listened to the D-E905 but I know it is similar in design to the D777.

Overall though the players are pretty close. This is using the line out through a Total Airhead to Grado SR-60's

Hi Canman,

I use a Total Airhead also. It's great sounding with the Grados. I like the D-E775s a lot and am glad the 805s are so good. I didn't much like the D-777 I auditioned recently. I found it thin and bright sounding even through my Senn 600s. I know it is supposed to be a classic but I was not impressed. Maybe that one was a dud?
