I'm trying to expand a bit here. got some Godspeed You Black Emperor lined up for instance.

which critical, influential or downright important artists am I missing here? list spans my favourite artists and, I think, a nice range of genres. anything outside the genres listed is welcome too ofcourse

Duke Ellington/Strayhorn - even if you don't like 'bigband' music, you should be familiar w/ Duke, if anything for their huge 'songbook' contributions. Recordings like '...And his Mother Called Him Bill' could stand well against just about anything, too.

Charlie Parker for bebop innovations, as well.

thanks for the replies so far!

for Radiohead, I have Kid A and OK Computer. not stuff I tend to listen too.

and I've checked ELP before, listened to Tarkus a lot of times...it's ok. nothing really interesting there IMO.

Some artists you might like:

Tangerine Dream (some call them prog rock!)
Weather Report (jazz/fusion)
Jaco Pastorius (jazz/fusion)
Tom Waits (!)
Jim O'Rourke (not his electronic stuff, listen to "Insignificance")
Sigur Ros (post-rock)
Boards of Canada (do you hate electronica?)

As for Godspeed You Black Emperor do not get their new one, the rest is all good. If you like them, some band-members have side projects that are really good: A Silver Mount Zion, Fly Pan Am, Set Fire To flames.

Maybe

Rock:
Bob Dylan
David Bowie
Lucinda Williams

Jazz:
Art Tatum - he goes up and down in critics polls, but I've always enjoyed his piano. Sounds like he has about four hands.
Charlie Mingus

I love Peter Gabriel, and I'm ofcourse familiar with some of Genesis' hits in the 80s. my favourite Marillion CDs are probably hardly like 70s Genesis tho (Anoraknophobia, Brave, Seasons End). I have been thinking about getting Selling England By The Pound tho, it's not that expensive.

The Gathering------->Lacuna Coil, Nightwish

I know Nightwish and have listened to some Lacuna Coil. Nightwish is not my favourite, and grunt vocals are a big turndown. a friend of mine has a couple of their albums, so maybe I'll borrow some.

Dreamtheater,Bozzio Levin Stevens------->Liquid Tension Experiment - I & II

LTE surely has it's moments, but it tends to wear off after a while and gets boring.

Miles Davis------->Mahavishnu-John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Stanley Clark, Billy Cobham (jazz/rock fusion)

oh, theres so much jazz out there!

my dad has a Tull compilation. I like some of it...

Tool - All albums

everyone's hot on Tool nowadays...should check em out probably, but don't they have this angry attitude going on?
Quote:

SymphonyX

who? mmmm, let's check AMG...
Quote:

Queensryche-Operation Mindcrime

he's a great guitarplayer right? at least, thats what I've heard. gets lots of praise from guitar players I adore...why don't I have him already? beats me!

Gentle Giant
Steve Hacket's solo work

I got a love/hate relationship with that music. Gentle Giant should be good. I'll download some stuff, but not without preservations..
Quote:

Adrian Belew

tried to find some Belew solo stuff today, but couldn't find it...
Quote:

The Flower Kings

don't like em, sorry. the guys voice drives me nuts, and the music doesn't make up for it...sorry.
Quote:

Cairo
Enchant

who? AMG again! cool.

Quote:

Spock's Beard
Transatlantic
Explorer's Club

tributebands for 70s era prog...I'm 19, I'm not nostalgic about the 70s...it doesn't work for me. Spocks Beard has very good moments tho, can't help but like 'V'. Explorer's Club or anything else with Trent Gardner bores me...sorry.
Quote:

Strawbs (Rick Wakeman's old band)

worth a check perhaps. not a big RW fan tho.

listening to GYBE! now....not used to this kind of music. not powerfull, and hardly exciting. but I'll refrain from further comments for now.

That's the hip-hop version...

Braver -- methinks you will really dig Jeff Beck. Especially Wired, Blow By Blow, and There & Back.

You may also want to check out Al Di Meola. His early albums, Casino, Elegant Gypsy, and Splendido Hotel (and maybe Land of the Midnight Sun and Electric Rendezvous) are all great, as are the most recent works, such as World Sinfonia and Infinite Desire.

You can't go wrong with Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins.

DCD -- All of their albums are different, I recommend getting a greatest hits type compilation (or the box set if you're courageous) or the live album to start with. Spiritchaser is probably their most accessible single album.

Cocteau Twins -- greatest hits compilation, or the singles boxset if you're brave.

(Sorry for all the punny references.)
