I was curious... so I thought I would share...

EDIT: Took my digital caliper to it and the wire comes out to approximately 27AWG...

According to a Senn rep, some time ago I contacted them for an explanation on what was inside those cables, and according to him, this cable is made out of OFC copper with Kevlar strands for increased strength...that is all you see there...nothing fancy but works fine...

Mainly all headphones cables uses more or less that same approach, all what I have seen with a few exceptions, use Kevlar to reinforce the strands of cooper, that is one of the ways of making them more resistant to break due to any accident, as the Kevlar will take the pulling energy...

Yes I think the stock cables for the HD650's are pretty good and in appearance and structure (strength) appear to better some phones costing 3 times the retail price of the 650's. Well I will find out soon on the phones at 3 times the cost with some 9's landing soon.

Copper wire and insulation I presume...

Actually, just bare wire with a strand of Kevlar wrapped around the outside for added durability. I chopped off the proprietary plugs because I am going gut them and run Cardas wire through them into my HD600's for hardwiring

And use the plastic shells for wire durability, protection and a nice 'professional' looking finish.

They get the job done. I'm planning to put a 650 cable on the 600; I like the heavier build. Also, I want to keep a spare around in case one of them falls victim to the cat.

580\600 and 650 cables BOTH are made from high quality LITZ(only the 650 cable have thickier insulation). The same litz you'll find in Cardas cable...

Have you tried the HD600 cable??? I like its sound signature better and for portable HD25-I use it would take up a lot less space. I still use it for comparisons so I'm not chopping it, but I bet they are the same AWG...

Senn cable is stranded but I don't believe it qualifies as a 'Litz' type conductor due to the fact that each strand in each conductor is not individually insulated from each other. If you google 'Litz' wire I'm sure you'll find a detailed explanation. It has to do with 'crosstalk' between the strands
