I just listened to the HD600's today, they were amplified at the store but it was on a rack with a bunch of headphones so I don't know which amp. I liked them a lot but I wonder if there isn't something else that will be a bit brighter/cleaner and give more bass. It looks like I could get the HD600's for 250-300. I could spend a bit more for better quality. Thanks.

What have you tried? And what are your music genres. Do you want open or closed phones?

The DT990. But to my ears it sounded horribly shrill as well. Possibly a matter of system compatibility (Zhaolu DAC, Corda Aria). You should check it out.

But in all honesty, it sounds like the HD600 you heard was not properly amped at all. An HD650 will give you more bass, but it also needs a proper amp.

The HD-600s are excellent headphones. You might consider that they were being fed by a poor amp, very likely just a headphone distribution box, resulting in rather poor sound. However, there are quite a few headphones around that are easier to get bass from, such as Denons, Grados and Ultrasones, but that wont make up for a poor source and amp.

Denon D7000 maybe. Having just aquired the HD600 and the Grado 325is (again), the 325is sure sounds great- more detail and punchy bass compared to the 600 IMO. They all sound good though with good a recording, source and amplification.

The HD-600 with a better amp should give you what you're looking for. They were probably run off something of middling value at the store. Put them on a good amp and they should be what you're looking for.

If not, have a look at a Denon AH-D2000.

Easy, HD650, it has more bass than 600, more lush mids and butter smooth upper high.

I say invest in a good source and tube amp. I have both, and honestly the HD600's bass is not far off from the HD650's, when properly amped.

I tend to pick up my HD600's more because of that extra clarity, the difference in bass is minimal to me..

If you have a powerful amplifier it's hard to beat what the HD600 offers without coloring the sound... but I personally liked the DT880 (I listened to the 250 ohm I believe) a lot.. I could live with the 880s - the midrange is really clear, and the low end doesn't disappoint, it's definitely a little fuller and deeper. My 2 cents is try the DT880. Fairly intimate, clear, balanced sound, a little more forward sounding than HD600.

After that it's hard since you're going to have to jump a price grade.
