What's a teen going to want - a Guitar or a Can?

I'm sooooooo tempted to sell my 70's "Black Beauty" Gibson LP Custom right now and use the profits to buy a PS-1. But then I thought - someday, if I'm going to give something nice to my kid from my collection, what is he going to want 15 years from now? A guitar, or headphones? If he stinks at guitar like his old man, he might consider the cans. But if he's the next coming of Jimmy Page, he's going to kick my arse for selling off a vintage axe. Plus, the chicks think guitarists are cool, but not the A/V kids. Plus, 15 years from now aren't the drivers on the PS-1 going to be shot? Choices choices!

Keep the guitar. You'll probably just end up finding the money for the PS-1 elsewhere anyway, so you'll end up with both.

Well I think you're right. In 15 years the headphones will be dead or obsolete. Guitars may be a different story. Hasn't the Les Paul remained essentially the same since it was first introduced? It's a classic and in time can be worth a lot of money. If you take care of it, it will probably still work in 15 and even 50 years. Take a look at what a pre-war Martin guitar goes for.

side note - i wonder what a pre-war headphone looks like? i saw a turn of the century Edison can, and it wasn't pretty. bet it sounds like tin too.

LOL yeah - inviting friends over to check out the axe, or even bringing it in for show and tell, has a much higher "cool" factor than "check out these metal headphones!" i guess.

I say keep the guitar. It's true that teenage girls like a guy who can play guitar. There's considerable more social potential with a guitar and maybe you'll foster some musical talent.

A Gibson guitar will likely appreciate in value as well as sound quality. I doubt a pair of headphones would. Also, who knows what sort of cans will be in vogue in 15 years. Tiny, unnoticable earbuds I'm guessing.

The Guitar!

There should be much better headphones by then, so why would he want some outdated PS-1's when he is just going to sell them to get the Senn HD-900 or the Grado PS-1000

Guitars never go out of style and he can learn skills and discipline and have a much better social life.

I know some girls who would kill to see me walking down the hall with PS-1's on my head. Talk about stylish!

It's an original - it's solid mahoghany with a maple top all slathered in black lacquer with the white bindings nicely cream yellowed over time - plus it has an unusual thing - Factory Nickel Hardware - most LPs of the time came with gold plated hardware. This baby is a monster, I can't handle it. I'm a frail little acoustic player - this LP shatters with my 100 watt Fender amp, yikes.

Edit - and it weighs a ton. Seriously. You can't pick this thing up by the neck and hold it horizontally. It will create divots in your legs if you sit with it.
